STEADY EXPANSION INDIAN NAVAL FORCES (British Official Wweieew) RUGBY, September 32. (Recevxed September 33, at 10.16 a.m.) In consequence of the steady growth of India’s naval strength, Vice-Admiral Fitzherbert, whoso term of appointment as Flag Officer Commanding the Royal Indian Navy has recently been extended another year from November next, has under his command the most powerful naval force ever to keep guard in India’s own waters. The Indian shipyards are now working at the full capacity of the building slips’ available on the initial scheme of expansion. Australian shipyards are helping witli larger local naval defence craft. New modern sloops from Britain will shortly further increase the offensive strength of the Indian naval forces. Following the entry of Italy into the war the personnel of the Indian Navy, which has already been expanded 200 per cent, sinoe September, 1939, is to be expanded still further. The security of the Red Sea route from India to the Middle East is strikingly illustrated by the fact that no less than 71 troop and military supply ships proceeded without a single casualty from Indian ports to their destinations between September 1, 1939, and August 1. 1940. Some 944 special military trains were run to and from Indian ports in the first year of the war, and among the units which journeyed safely overseas on active service is the famous Bikaner Camel Corps. FDRGED LANDING IN SWEDEN TWO BRITISH CREWS INTERNED STOCKHOLM, September 22. (Received September 23, at 12.40 p.m.) Two British planes made a forced landing in western Sweden. Affi CASUALTIES NEW ZEALAND PILOTS [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 22. The following, air casualties were announced to-night:— Pilot-officer Clarence Francis Tibbitts, missing on air operations. His father is Mr H. F. Tibbjtts, of Wairoa. . Pilot-officer Howard Perry Hill, missing on air operations. His father is Mr J. S. Hill, of Spring Creek, Marlborough. Pilot-officer Basil Willian Perymau, who was reported missing on June 29, is now believed to be a prisoner of war. His father is Mr H. W. Peryman, of Lincoln, Canterbury. FREIGHTER ELMRANK REPORTED TO HAVE BEEN TORPEDOED NEW YORK, September 22. The Mackay Radio has picked up a message from the freighter Elmbank reporting that she had been torpedoed in the North Atlantic, 1 00 miles north-west of Ireland, after a chase by a submarine. [The Elmbank (5,156 tons), which is owned by the Bank Line Ltd., is well known in Dunedin, having visited here with phosphate cargo.]
