HANDEL'S 'MESSIAH'
Very few realise that Handel’s immortal ‘ Messiah,’ of which ‘ The Hallelujah Chorus ’ is only a part, wa» fully composed in 23 days. The present custom of standing during a performance of the ‘ Hallelujah Chorus ’ date* from the first performance (1842). A report on that first performance states i “The audience was exceedingly struck and affected by the music,in general; but when the chorus struck up ‘Tor the Lord God Omnipotent ’ in the Hallelujah, they were so transported that they all, together with the King (who; happened to be present), started up and remained standing till the chorus ended.” ■ ‘ The Hellelujah Chorus and other music from Handel’s Messiah will be rendered as part of a song service entitled “ The Humble Potentate ” at the Salvation Army Citadel to-morrow*
