SOUTH DUNEDIN SING
SEASON DRAWING TO CLOSE MYSTERY HAMPER " DRIVE The second last community sing of the 1940 season to he staged by the South Dunedin Business Men’s Association in the Mayfair Theatre attracted a large crowd tq-day. Air R. M‘Kcnzie was the leader, and he was supported by Air Ernest Fish (song leader) and by Mrs E. D. Cameron (pianist). Money raised to-day went to' the fund for soldiers’ parcels, and this benefited to the extent of £23. Solo performances were given by Air Charles Barnett, who rendered ‘ Homeland ’ and ‘ Theres’ a Land,’ and by Air James Aliller, who was heard in two bass solos, ‘ Simon the Cellarer and ‘ Alyself When Young.’ In addition, ‘ When I Was One Year Old ’ was sung by little Ruth Kedzlie, who did not look to bo very much older than .that. She came along full of optimism determined to do her share of the entertainment. She had about 40 songs in her possession, and these she gave to Airs Cameron with instructions “ to play.” Next Wednesday will be the final sing in the Alayfair Theatre,* but there will bo a grand “ wind-up ” on October C in His Majesty's Theatre. On Friday a special “ stunt ” will be staged by the Sing Committee, this consisting of a beer barrel race through the main streets of South Dunedin. A race will he held in the afternoon and another in the evening. During the proceedings tickets in a “ mystery hamper ” raffle will be sold, and the prize is stated to be something worth winning. Proceeds will be in. aid of soldiers’ parcels.
