JGTTINGS Definitely Off. It is now reported that Van Derby s proposed trip to the Dominion this season is definitely 7 off, and that he will remain in Tasmania. Beaulivre’s Winnings. Beaulivro won £2,315 at two years, and £7,4(50 (£2,870 in Australia) last season. With three wins in Sydney in this term ho has increased his score to well over £II,OOO. Recent Registrations. Among recent registrations are those of Madam Cherry, a 1935 mare by le Monanui from Paigle; Sergeant Major a 1939 colt bv Salmagundi from Gold Silk; and Sing Sing, a 1933 Idly by Salmagundi from Shelter. In New Colours. At Ashburton Airline made his first appearance in the colours of Tinipauy brothers, his now Southland owners, .but he is, still in the Hogan stable. He made a creditable showing, and looked as if the race might do him good. New Zealand Cup Candidates. In the Geraldine Cup, to he run tomorrow, six of the acceptors, Passaform, Swordstick, The Wrecker, Glenora Boy* Dunstan, and Night Hawk, are New Zealand Cup candidates. Hearth, who is engaged in the Squatters’ Handicap. and Great Night and Airline in the Belfield Hack Handicap, are also engaged in the New Zealand Cup. The Wellington Stakes. Despite the fact that on his two-year-old form Special, Force looks to be almost unbeatable in the Wellington Trotting Stakes to be run on Saturday, 11 other horses have been paid up for. Unfortunately Special Force is not engaged in the Derby to he run at Addington next November. Will Be Appreciated. The committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club ,'has decided, to alter the starting time of the first race each day of the spring meeting from 12.45 to 12.15. Tltis will be appreciated by the club’s patrons from Southland, who will now be able to see the last race each day and catch the south express to their homes.

Out of Hack Class. Prudent Prince's win at Ashburton last Saturday put him out of hack class, but he has been racing so well lately that he should hold his own in open company. Prudent Prince is a four-year-old gelding by Lord Quex from Squeeze, a sister to Cuddle and half-sister to Padishah. New Zealand Cup Handicaps. Handicaps for the New Zealand Cup p arc due on Friday morning. There is little speculation as to which horse Mr Russell will select for his top weight, hut there is much more guessing as to just how many pounds ho will place Royal Chief above the next on the list. By Siegfried. Kai Tore, who finished second in the Malaya Gold Cup last Saturday, is by the Southland-owned sire Siegfried, from Vigilance, by Lord Quex from the Signalman mare Watchful, aiid a full brother to Lady Furst. Kai Tere, who is now six years old, did his early racing in Australia, from where he was sold to go to the East. Lost Four Seconds at Start. Ferry Post started from the 36yds mark when he won the Harper Handicap at Now Brighton last week, but, performing his usual antics at the start, it is estimated that he lost fully four seconds (48yds) before he struck his gait. At the Wellington meeting he will start from 60yds behind, but that will not prevent him winning, providing he can be persuaded to begin smartly. ’ Draw for Positions Will Count. The seven-furlongs barrier at Orari is on a turn, and the horses have to race for over a furlong before they get a straight run. Post positions are unusually important here, as the angle is such that even if a 100 per cent, start is effected it will appear (from the stands) to be a bad one. ; A Big Field. Twenty-two of the 24 acceptors in the mile and three furlongs light harness race tit Geraldine to-morrow are handicapped to start from scratch. The safety number under rule 230 permits only 16 horses to start off that mark. Provision will have to be made for a division, and this will cause more than usual confusion, as there is no handy place in which to marshal a second division at this barrier.

Saturday’s Big Race in Sydney. The stake originally olferod for the Hill Stakes (to bo inn at Randwick on Saturday) was £750, but the A.4.C. lias promised to increase this by £SOO in consideration of tho match between Bcaulivro and Bean Vite being called off. A clause in tho conditions stated that the winner of tho Chcjmsford Stakes shall carry a penalty of 71b.

Roy Bun’s Rider. Roy Bun was ridden in his success at Ashburton last Saturday by C. Mackie, a son of the former well-known North island rider, R. J. Mackie. Mackie is apprenticed to Roy Bun’s trainer, M. Conzu, and last Saturday’s was his first win. He had ridden in only a few races previously, but nevertheless attracted attention by his handling of tho winner. Roy Bun had a 61b allowance at Ashburton, and if Mackie rides him again in the Geraldine Cup his weight ■will be reduced to 7.7.

Sly Fox. in tho New Zealand Cup two seasons ago Slv Fox, then a four-year-old, had 7.10 and started first favourite each wav, having five wins to his credit that season. Sly Fox attempted to win all tho way, but nearly ran off the course at tho "home turn, and that, cost him any chance he might have had. Sly Fox, who is engaged again in this year’s Cup, ran third in the mile, and a-quarter race at Avondale last Saturday, so is evidently well forward in condition. It is reported that Sly Fox is now not nearly such a strong puller as he was, and has also been cured of tho habit of boring out from the rails. Well Treated. In the Sydenham Hurdles, ou the last day of "the Grand National meeting, Recollection was given the same weight as the Grand National Hurdles winner, Limbohm, who was allotted 11.10 in the Styx Hurdles. If that assessment is correct, Recollection needs only to get round with 11.2 at Orari to be in the money. Ho did not compete over hurdles last season, but prior to commencing his holiday he won at Ashburton with 11.5.

Betting Units Considered.’ Although the limit in this year’s Trotting Oup will be 4.26, with a stake of £2,500, similar conditions to those governing the race last year will again be in operation, the committee reserving the right select the horses to go to the post. Jn the event of a horse on a mark slower than 4.26 being placed third the stake for that position will be increased by £IOO. At present there are probably 14 horses assessed on 4.26 or faster who could be regarded as almost certain to start in the oup, but the fact that at least seven would form three brackets—Parisienne, Southern Chief, and Great Jewel being trained by ill. B. Berry, Morello and Fine Art by M. C. M'Tigue, Plutus and Marlene by C. S. Donald—apparently is responsible for the club allowing the more loosely assessed horses to be entered, to overcome a possible shortage of betting units if the race were to be confined to the 4.26 class or better. Nominations close ou October 4. Have Earned Their Rest.

Rol I’Or, one of tho trotting idols of tho racing public in Canterbury a few years ago, is at present in the North Canterbury district, and irj a good home is being given sufficient exercise to keep him in healthy condition. Occasionally used as a shepherd’s hack, Roi I’Or is also the children’s favourite mount when odd jobs are to he done. The old favourite looks fit and well, and his legs show no sign of the hard racing ho has gone through. Another public favourite in Harold Logan is still the pet of Mr E. F. C. Hinds and Miss Hinds at New Brighton, and for his age he is one of the best preserved pacers in the Dominion. Harold Logan won a big number of races, and is the only horse to carry a garland of flowers given by an admiring public. Still another champion of bygone years in Logan Chief carries out menial duties on an Otago farm in making the daily trip of three miles for the mad. The'threo champions mentioned have well earned the easy _ life they are now enjoying, and it is a tribute to their owners, who have appreciated the good services given. The Geraldine Meeting.

The Geraldine Racing Club’s annual race mooting will commence to-morrow, tlio first race starting at noon. A good deal of rain has fallen in South Canterbury during the past fortnight, bui owing to the good natural drainage it will not have seriously affected the course. Good fields have been paid up for, and the betting will be on the usual win and place system.

Tho following horses arc likely to be fancied in their engagements:— Hurdle Handicap, mile and five furlongs.—Master - Dingle, Recollection, Waka. Ohapi Hack Handicap, six furlongs.— Wild Coon, Safelight, Ail Night. Geraldine Cup, mile and a-quarter.— Glenora Boy, Combat, Nightdress. Geraldine Harness Handicap (about 3.25), mile and three furlongs.—Happy Man, Anrie’s Star, Haraarfast. Jlaukapuka Hack Handicap, seven furlongs.—Airline, Muscatine, Taxpayer.

Squatters’ Handicap, six furlongs.— Kilrobe, Rebel Star, Hearth. Orari Harness Handicap (3.2), mile and a-quarter.—lrish Dawn, Clive Brook, Happy Man. Belfiold Hack Handicap, nine furlongs.—Dranool, Ferriby, Iceland Spar.
