Y.W.C.A. NOTES
(Contributed.) Miss Agues Moncrieff arrived in Wellington' on furlough from China on Tuesday last, meeting the members of the Y.W.C.A. National Board, who were in conference at an evening function. The dates of Miss Moncrieff’s visit to Dunedin have been altered, and she will now arrive in the second wdek of November, Miss Jean Begg writes from Kashmir (India), where she has been spending a short holiday: “You. will want a little personal news. I am entering my tenth year of service in India, and it is to be my' last, as now my successor has been appointed and will arrive in November. It has been a great experience and privilege, and it has brought to me an enrichment in friendships and incidentally a very high regard for my fellow’ women, European and American as well as Indian.’’ Miss J ean Stevenson has handed back the general secretaryship of the Cal-, cutta Y.W.C.A. to Miss Mabel Rae, who returned in July after furlough. Miss Stevenson has been at Ooticamund during the hot weather taking training courses. In September Miss Stevenson goes to Lahore to aot as administrative secretary for that district. ■ - From Rangoon comes welcome news from Miss Delight Lynn that she is planning to be home on furlough towards the middle of 1941. Miss A. M. Bentham left Wellington for Australia last Friday to attend the Australian National Convention before taking up her duties as general secretary of the Perth Y.W.C.A. The world fellowship bazaar in aid of Dunedin’s quota for world fellowship funds will bo held in the hall on Thursday, October 3, and members of the board and committees are busy preparing for the stalls. These comprise a work stall, a cake and delicatessen stall, book, flowers, and a gift stall. Donations will be gratefully received. The annual meeting of the association will be held on Wednesday, September 25, at 8 p.m. Members and friends are invited to take part in the dedication service which will follow’ the annual meeting. The sixty-third birthday party will be held on the same evening after the service. The Y.W.C.A. had four members in the Otago basketball representative team which - defeated Canterbury at Logan Park. Betty Neill, playing hex first game in the Otago team, ably supported Queenie Phelan, our attractive centre, the three centres combining well throughout the game. Mabel Morrison on attack again demonstrated her
ability in handling the ball, while Nancjj Haulm played a’strong defensive game, and witlx a little more experience with first-class players 'should make a name for herself in New Zealand basketball. Visiting teams, one from Timaru and two from Christchurch, will meet three Y.W.C.A. teams on the last Saturday of this month. A captains’ meeting is to he held on Wednesday at 7 p.m. to arrange details re billeting, the teams to play the visitors, closing functions, etc., and captains ax;e all urged to give consideration to their notices and to come to the meeting armed with suggestions. As the Caledonian Grounds are not available next month; the Y.W.C.A. annual sports day will be held on tha first Saturday in November. If is hoped to form a tennis chi fa this year, and intending players should get i'hto touch with Mrs M’Aughtrie immediately. Cricket and baseball clubi will be opening shortly. Intending play, ers will be advised to get into touci with the secretary'as soon as possible.
