BRITISH CHILDREN
FURTHER ARRIVALS MAY BE EXPECTED COMMUNICATION FROM MINISTER A communication from the Minister of Internal Aifairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) on the subject of British children coming to New Zealand has been received by the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen). The Minister advised that a large party of children had arrived in the Dominion, but they were travelling under purely private arrangements and were accompanied by their mothers in most cases. However, the Minister stated, others would arrive and instructions had been issued by the Education Department to the various child welfare officers concerning the preparations for their reception. Inquiries had been made by members of the public if it would be possible to adopt any of the British children, the Minister stated, but he wished to make it clear the residence of these children in this country would not be permanent. However, a note could be taken of those people willing to adopt any children, he concluded. Now that we had some definite information that children would be' coming under the official Government scheme, stated the Mayor, the local committee would be pleased to receive further applications from people in Dunedin and Otago who were willing to offer homes to children for the duration of the war. Applications could bo sent to the mayor or to the town clerk, Mr Allen said.
