AJAX
AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE TOTAL WINNINGS £39,425 The victory in the Memsie Stakes at Flemington last Saturday took Ajax into fourth place in the list of Australian stake winners, as it brought his total winnings to £39,425, and put him ahead of Limerick, £38,729 10s. Those ahead of Ajax are;—Phar Lap, £66,738; Amounis, £48,297 10s; and Gloaming, £43,100. When they had done racing Phar Lap, Amounis, Gloaming, and Limerick had no further use, but Ajax will have great stud value. So far Ajax has started in 43 races for 35 wins, five seconds, two thirds, and was once unplaced. His record is in some respects similar to that of Carbine, whose record was 43 races, 33 wins, six seconds, three thirds, and once unplaced. The race in which Ajax was unplaced was the Sires’ Produce Stakes at Flemington, when he hung off the course. Injury was responsible for Carbine’s unplaced performance. He split a hoof in the Canterbury Plate, and was pulled up. I
Ajax has done little racing in handicaps. His first two races were handicaps at Caulfield as a two-year-old, and his first as a tliree-year-old was in the Chatsworth Plate at Caulfield. He did not contest another handicap until he ran in the Newmarket Handicap, which ho won as a three-year-old. All his racing since the Newmarket Handicap has been in weight-for-age races or handicaps with a maximum weight. Six of 43 races contested by Carbine were handicaps—Newmariket Handicap as a three-year-old with 8.12; Australian Cup as a three-year-old with 8.6; Sydney Cup as a three-year-old, 9.0; Sydney Cup ns a four-year-old, 9.9; Melbourne Cup as a four-year-old, 10.0; Melbourne Cup as a five-year-old, 10.5. He won the two .Sydney Cups, won one Melbourne Cup, and was second in the other, was third in the Newmarket Handicap, and second in the Australian Cup. His winnings, however, amounted to only £29,626. Ajax’s record is as follows: TWO YEARS. £. Won V.A.T.C. Holiday Stakes, five furlongs and a-half, 7.10 350 Won V.A.T.C.
