DUNEDIN CRICKET CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING A spirit of enthusiasm was clearly in evidence at the forty-seventh annual x meeting of the above club held last night, and, despite the uncertainty 'regarding the immediate future which war conditions engendered, a determination to carry on was expressed by all the speakers. Mr R. C. Torrance, who .presided, was re-elected to the office of president, and he mentioned that the club was in a sound financial position. The meeting decided to "(recommend to the Cricket Association that it consider the advisability of playing one-day matches during the coming season. The Chairman, in moving the adop- . tion of the annual report and balance sheet, referred to the improved form shown last'season by the club’s various teams, particularly by the senior eleven, which had finished third in its competition, and the, second grade A team, which had won the shield in that grade. The respective captains, G. J. (Robertson and T. Ritchie,- were complimented upon their leadership and their ability as players, Robertson, who had for the third time won the Maclean Cup for the best batting average in all grades, having achieved another fine all-round performance. The Chairman also mentioned that IR. Wedlake, T. Rodgerson, J. Macassey, and T. Ritchie had scored centuries during the season, and expressed the hope that the trips into the country which had been taken last year would be repeated. Fifteen of the club’s members and ex-members, said the speaker, were on active service, and others had enlisted and were waiting to be called up. “ What the future holds for us we cannot at present say,” concluded the president, “ but it behoves all of us who are in a position to do so to put our shoulders to the wheel and help to keep the club alive, even if the. number of teams put m the field is materially reduced.” .Mr G. A. Wycherley seconded the motion. He mentioned that, during the 1914-18 war the club had, for a season or two, been unable to field any teams, and it had been only the efforts of some of the older members that had kept the club in existence at all. While congratulating those members who had enlisted and expressing the hope that they would all return safely to again take up the game, he urged those who were destined to remain at home to do their best to help the club carry on. Mr J. A. Robson also spoke to the motion, and referred to matters which ’ the Cricket Association had in hand. He remarked on the difficulty which the various car,etakers_ had, • owing to the 40-hour week them of assistance on Saturday mornings, in putting the finishing touches on the wickets for afternoon play. "The motion was carried.
