[From Our Correspondent) OBITUARY. The death took place at his home, 14 Duke street, Dunedin, on Monday, of Mr John Henry Uren, formerly of Roxburgh and the Blue Spur, at the age of 86. Mr Uren was for a large number of years closely connected with the mining industry as employee of the Blue Spur Consolidated Sluicing Company, of which ho was for some years manager. He left .with his wife and family to reside in Dunedin a’ good number of years ago. Mr Uren leaves one son, Mr J. H. Uren of Roxburgh, and three daughters—Mrs S. J. Varcoe, and Misses Christina and Maud Uren, of Dunedin. LAWRENCE PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE. A meeting of the Lawrence Patriotic Committeo was presided over by the mayor (Mr R. F. Batchelor). Messrs R. J. Forbes (Lawrence), R. C. Hall, R. Hunter, and P. Fahey (Tuapeka West) were appointed collectors. A report on the soldiers’ farewell stated that receipts totalled £l7 Is 6d. Six donations of £2 2s had been made, and after petty expenses a balance remained of £4 3s Bd, which was held for further functions of the kind. Collections to date totalled £4OO 11s 7d, including the £lB4 16s Id received from the band funds. Arrangements for the queen carnival effort were then discussed. Mr Batchelor reported on the meeting held in Dunedin to select the Air Force queen. It was reported that benedicts proposed to run a ball early in October for the Air Force queen. A card evening was also arranged for an early date. It was decided to ask the Farmers’ Union in Lawrence and Waitahuna for donations of produce for sale at the concert. It was also decided to hold a bring-and-buy sale in October and to obtain badges for sale by the collectors. GOLF. A mixed foursome bogey match, played at Roxburgh, was won by Mrs W. Hoban and H. J. Wright. The next best cards were: Mrs T. Rue and J. Burton, 1 up; Mrs Clark and G. N. Jeffery, 1 up; Mrs J. R. Gilmour and F. Laloli, 1 up; Miss D. Bain and J. Pearson, 1 up. In the final of the knock-out competition. Air Win. Johnstone defeated Mr B. V. Wright, 1 up. The Standard of play was very high, B. V. Wright doing a 67 for the round.
