DUNEDIN FRENCH CLUB

With “Business as usual ” as the slogan the Dunedin French Club met on Alonday evening at the Girls’ High School. Air T. J. Arnold, the speaker of the evening, chose as his subject one of tho most interesting colonies of the French Empire, Indo-China. He outlined briefly its strategic importance, its history, its ancient customs, and the French methods of developing the country. Then followed a sketch of the main geographical regions, of the numerous products, and the industrial activity, and descriptions of living conditions in the principal towns and ports, as given by' various French authors, including Pierre Loti. Finally, reference was made to the latest reports of the possibilities and potentialities of IndoChina as a centre of prospective international disputes. The second part of the evening’s programme was a short play entitled ‘ Speak To Ale No Alore of Allah,’ the parts being taken by Alesdames Beilugue and King and by Afessrs Bellugue, Arnold, AlacNish, Wood, and Dunbar. Miss V. AI. Barron, who occupied the chair, thanked the performers on behalf of those present.
