WAIREKA REMOVAL
TENTATIVE DATE SEPTEMBER 18 CGNCRETING OF HULL PROGEEDIHG Arrangements have been made hy the Harbour Board for the shifting of the old ferry steamer Waireka from Quarantine Island to a site which has already been levelled off for her near the cement works on the north side of the Upper Harbour. It is intended meantime to shift the vessel from the island about Wednesday next, when the full moon wlil have brought a spring tide suitable for the purpose. An inspection of the hull has revealed that the plates are very thin, and at present the work of concreting them up preparatory to mooring the Waireka off the island as tho first stage of the programme for bringing her up tho fairway is being completed. In the opinion of the local authorities, however, the operation of negotiating that portion of the channel from Quarantine Island to Ravcnsbouruo is not expected to bring any danger through the vessel sinking in tho fairway. It seems likely that before the end of the month the Navy League Sea Cadets will have the satisfaction of seeing their new “ ship ” safely berthed at her latest 11 port.”
