GENERAL INCREASE IN ALL SECTIONS

THE NEW SCHEDULE ANNOUNCEMENT [Special to the ‘ Star.’] WELLINGTON, September 29. ■ Following upon the announcement of the Minister of Finance in the House on, Tuesday night of a decision to increase letter postage as a means of raising additional revenue for war purposes, and Mr Nash’s statement that there would be some adjustment of other rates, the Postmaster-General, the Hon. F. Jones, to-day furnished particulars of the general increases that would apply from October 1. Commenting generally on the increases, the Minister said that the public might not be aware thatithe post, telegraph, and telephone rates they enjoyed in New Zealand were in many instances the lowest in the world. Even as increased, he said, the rates did not compare unfavourably with those in other countries, and he was sanguine that the increases would be accepted by the public as a necessary contribution in the emergency now obtaining. Particulars of the principal chanjges are as follows: POSTAL BRANCH LETTERS. Inland—2d for the first ounce, Id for each additional half-ounce. Empire—2d the first half-ounce and Id for each additional half-ounce. Foreign—3d the first half-ounce and Id for each additional half-ounce. Inland by air:—3d each half-ounce, late fee 2d additional to postage, registration fee 4d additional to postage; express delivery fee 6d a mile. Post-cards; Inland Id, overseas lsd. COMMERCIAL PAPERS. Id the first 4oz, Jd for each additional 2oz. Printed papers, non-advertising circulars, Christmas cards, etc.: Id the first 4oz and id for each additional 2oz. NEWSPAPERS. Inland, id for each 4oz; Empire, id for each 3oz; foreign, Jd for each 2oz (no change). Library exchanges :id for, each 4ez_; packets, Id for each 2oz, with a minimum of 3d. PARCELS. 31b, 8d; 71b, Is 3d; 141 b, 2s; 211 b, 2s 9d; 281 b, 3s 6d. POSTAL NOTES. An all-round increase of Id in poundage. Money order commission: Id for each £l, with a minimum of 6d. INLAND TELEGRAMS. Ordinary weekdays, 8d for six words or less, and Id for each additional word. Sundays and holidays: Rate and a-half. Letter telegrams, Is 2d for 24 words or less, and Id for each additional two words; urgent fee, Bd. OVERSEAS TELEGRAMS AND RADIO TELEGRAMS. Twopence additional on each message. PRESS TELEGRAMS. One shilling and eightpence for each 100 words, with a reduction to Is 2d for messages of 50 words or less. TELEPHONE TOLL CALLS. An additional charge of Id for. each 6d of toll charge for all calls costing more than 3d.
