JOTTINGS Reply to Correspondent. “ J.G.” —(1) Hinerawc, who is engaged in the New Zealand Cup, is a four-year-old filly by Robespierre from Oratrix, and owned by Mr R. J. Murphy and trained by T. R. George. Oratrix, who won the New Zealand Cup in 1928 is by Kilbroney from Oratress (winner of New Zealand Cup in 1920), by Demosthenes, from Equitas, by Advance from Muriwai, by Torpedo, and descends back to a mare, bred in New South Wales from unknown blood. (2) Lady Zetland won the New Zealand Cup in 1896, but Lady Lilian never won this race. Tn 1894 Lady Zetland won both the Great Easter and Autumn Handicaps, and in 1900 Iter daughter, Lady Lilian, won the same double. Both of these mares were owned by Mr Edwin Gates, who also bred them. (3) Thermidor is by Robespierre from Lady Minerval, who was by Martian from Lady Lilian, and is the only direct descendant of the Lady Zetland family engaged in this year’s New Zealand Cup.

Should Beau Vite win the A.J.C. Derby to-morrow he will give the exNcw Zealand jockey, M. M'Carten, his fourth winning ride on n Dominion-bred horse in that classic. Ho has previously won the race on Ballymena. Ammon Ra. and Theo.

Starter for Oamaru Trots. Mr Thos. Marshall, of Invercargill, has been reappointed starter for the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Labour Day. Win and Place Betting. The Timarti Trotting Chib has decided to use the win and place system of betting at its summer meeting on December 16. Omitted from List of Acceptors. Mario’s Acre 8.3, should be included in the list of acceptors for the Ngatea Handicap on the opening day of the Ohineimiri races. Acre has been omitted from the official card. South Canterbury Spring Meeting. The spring meeting of the South Canterbury Jockey Club, to be held on October 14, will distribute £1.150 in stakes, the principal race, the Tescbenmker Handicap, carrying £240. Nominations close on Monday, at 9 p.m. Train Arrangements. For the convenience of owners and trainers attending the Dunedin spring meeting next week the Railway Dopartment has arranged to run a speoial train to Christchurch on Sunday morning, leaving Dunedin at 8.30. Changes In Dates. Changes in racing dates have been approved as followsOtautau, to November 4 ; Woodvilic, February 24 and 20 from February 23 and 24; and Greymouth, March 28 in lieu of the meeting abandoned on September 9. An Unlikely Starter. It is reported from Riverton that Lady Blissful, who is suffering from a slight cold, will not be a starter in the Dunedin Guineas next week. Lady Blissful is also engaged in the Novice Handicap, and may he given a run in that race. Single Enclosure at Washdyke. If the present intentions are carried out the indicator of the new totalisator to bo installed on the Washdyke course will, be placed on the eastern front of the totalisator house. If this is done it will mean only one enclosure at Washdyke. Single enclosures have been successfully tried on several courses in Southland. Winning Sires List. Thanks to the successes of Marscerea (twice), Donald Dhu, - Fortes, and Battlefield, Man o’ War headed the list of winning sires for the present ecasou to Septcinber 16, and with four seconds and as many thirds his progeny won £2,090 during the first six weeks of the present season. Jack Potts, with four winners, five seconds, and two thirds, and £1,370 in stakes, was nest.

The Stewards’ Handicap. It was originally intended that tho handicaps for the Stewards’ Handicap, to be run at Riccarton on November 4, should appear on the Tuesday following the Wellington spring meeting, but it has now been decided that the weights will be declared a week earlier, October 17; thus winners at the Wellington fixture will be liable to be rehandicapped.

Royal Chief. Provided that tho slight injury Royal Chief sustained about a fortnight ago has cleared up, the Colin Stephen Stakes, £1,500, to be run over a mile and a-hali at Randwick to-morrow, should be a good! thing for him. The field is a small one, arid a win would not entail a penalty for the New Zealand Cup. Ho will carry 9.5 to-mor-row, 11b less than he has been allotted in the Riccarton race.

A Promising Three-Year-Old.. Sleeveless, winner of the five furlong hack race at Poxton a fortnight ago, is a three-year-old filly by Valkyrian from Chivalry. She won early last season over a similar journey. Chivalry was by Gay Lad from Lady Talbot,by Pilgrim’s Progress from Lady Lilian, by Pharthon from Lady Zetland. Lady Lilian produced Lady Victoria, dam of Royal Star (winner of tho New Zealand Ctip), and Lady Minerva, dam of Minerva! (-winner of the Auckland Cup). A bright future is predicted for Sleeveless, -who is the last foal of her dam.

Flattered by Handicapper, Lower Deck, who has been allocated top weight in the Novice Stakes to be run at Wingatui .next week, is a four-year-old gelding by Cockpit from Beneficiary. He started twice last season, finishing unplaced in both starts, and in his only start this season, under 7.7., finished third to Dark Flight 8.3 and Flame Queen 8.4 over five furlongs at the Otago Hunt meeting. The field is not a good one, and tho handicapper has certainly flattered Lower Deck by placing him at the head of the list.

Likely to be Fancied To-morrow. Royal Star 11., who was purchased for 25gs last July, has so far stood up to training well and finished fourth in the Marton Handicap last Saturday. This English-bred gelding is engaged in the New Zealand Cup with 7.3, and though two miles may be too far for him it looks as if he has only to remain sound to return to the winning list. In his race at Marton Royal Star 11. was badly interfered with by The Bigot, and many good judges considered he was unlucky not to be returned the winner. He is likely to be well fancied at Otaki to-morrow.

The A.J.C. Derby, Beau Vite’s further success in Sydney last Saturday confirms the opinion expressed by his connections a fortnight ago that tho Beau Pere colt will be very bard to beat in the A.J.C. VANBRO —The faultless hair cream.

Derby, set down for decision at Randwrick to-morrow. The running of Gold Salute during the past three weeks has shown him to be in good form, but he lias been beating quite a different class to those Beau Vito has been racing against, and with such good ones as High Caste, Wilson, and Reading tomorrow’s classic beam a very open appearance. With Beau Vite, High Caste, Wilson, and Gold Salute representing Dominion-bred horses the race will have unusual interest for New Zealanders, ,

Methven Trotting Meeting. The Methven Trotting Club’s Meeting will be held to-morrow, when the totalisator will be worked on the win and place system. The following horses are likely to bo fancied in their engagements : 12— Drayton Handicap (3.49); Queen Bertha, Milestone, Westcliff. 12.40 Westward Ho Handicap (3.5): Passing By, Starace, Diviner. I.2o—Methven Cup (4.37); Southern Chief, Bill 8., Battlefield. 2.6—Avonmore Handicap (3.34): Poker Face, Idlealong, Lady Milne. 2.45 Mount Harding Handicap (3.1): Tiny Axworthy, Black Art, Wainoni Girl. 3.2s— Riverbank Handicap (3.47): Westcliff, Queen Bertha, Axworthy. 4.s— Holmes Memorial (2.51): Mazaire, Gentleman Joe, Quest. 4.45 Mount Hutt Handicap (2.21, saddle): Devotion, Idlealong, Palomar.
