SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Our Correspondent.] BALCLUTHA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. In the absence of tho president (Mr A. L. Shepard) Mr 6. Guest presided at a meeting of the above society. The secretary reported that replies had been received from several women’s institutes, and that a number who would exhibit “ bays ” at the spring show. Members considered it would be a mistake to drop the exhibition, and it was decided to hold the show on October 13, Trophies are to be awarded for best needlework article, and also for. best article in hands and crafts on the “ bays.” It was decided that the other handwork sections he deleted from the schedule this year, as they were all catered for on the “ bays.” It was also decided that the school children’s sections for baking and woodwork b© again conducted, while six classes for flowers were also added for school children. Miss I. Shaw was appointed judge of the W.I. “ bays,” Mr C. E. Naish of cut flowers, and Mr S. D. Macdonald of daffodils and decorative. MANCHESTER UNITY. There was a large attendance at the Quarterly meeting of Loyal Dalton Lodge last night, N.G. Bro. G. Houliston presiding. One candidate was initiated, and two proposals for membership were received. An interesting discussion took place on matters connected with the Hospital Benefit Association. P.G. Bro. Culbevt opened the discussion by asking why members of some lodges in the scheme had been credited with tho last quarterly contribution and Dalton members had not. He understood that the association was not collecting dues as from Juno 30 last and was not recognising any Ha-, bilitv for hospital accounts in view of the fact that social security was now in force. P.G. Bro. Guest, chairman of tho association, said th© position as stated by Bro. Culbert was correct, and that members were really entitled to the refund. In tho course of discussion some members considered that if the contributions were refunded the members would then bo unfinancial, and in the event of the association carrying on they would not be entitled to any benefits. Bro. Guest pointed out that the association had decided not to collect any contributions for_ six months, and that members financial on June 30 would still be tho _ same in February, when some decision as to th© future policy of the association would be made. It was decided that the members bo credited with the contributions paid, this to take effect next quarter. A remit was passed that the association he asked to consider carrying on, members expressing the opinion that as social security did not cover payment for out-patients. X-ray, or ambulance, the association could do good work in this respect, ami might, also provide extra payment to members on leaving hospital. At the conclusion of the meeting the Social Committee met and completed arrangements for the entertainment of delegates attending the district meeting to be held at. Balclutha on Saturday,
