WOMEN'S INSTITUTES

Green Island Branch. The Green Island Institute mot on Tuesday, September 19, Mrs Robinson presiding. The motto was “No matter what fortune brings don’t bo afraid of doing things,” and the roll call “ My most comical experience.” Mrs Talbot gave an interesting demonstration on “ bead bag making.” An item was given by the choir. The hostesses were Mesdames Orr, Lockhart, Walker, Oallandter, and Dryden. Taieri Branch. The September meeting of the Taieri Institute was held on -Thursday last, when Mrs Taylor presided. The motto was “ Life is a garden, every thought a seed,” and the roll call “ My favourite flower.” An interesting talk on ‘ The Early History and Travels of the Maori People Before Coming to Now Zealand ’ was given by the Rev'. E. P. Y. Simpson. The hostesses were Mesdames Currie, Gordon, Murray, Swallow, and Wallace, Roxburgh Branch. The September meeting of the Roxburgh Institute was held on Wednesday, Mrs Waters presiding. The motto was “ They that do themselves deny receive more blessings from the sky.” The competitions resulted; Best bloom, Miss Pannett 1; knitted article —Mrs APKnight 1. Airs Rac 2, Mis Hobbs and Airs Scott (equal) 3. An interesting talk on ‘ Home Nursing ’ was given by Sister lleilly. Mrs J. Young, on bebalf of the members, thanked the speaker and presented her with a bunch of violets. Four members were elected to represent the institute on the Roxburgh Women’s Patriotic Committee. The hostesses were Mesdames Martin, Moore. M'Knight, Jordan, and Aliss Pannett. Waitati Branch. The Waitati Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting, Mrs O’Fee presiding. The motto was “Never say of another what you would not have her hear,” and the roll call, “ What is the biggest bargain you hove found?” The competition, “best darn.” resulted;—Mrs Claningbold 1, Airs Tool)y 2. Airs Sharp gave an interesting demonstration on pastrymaking. Mrs .Heather was appointed delegate to attend the conference at Lawrence. It was decided io have a bring and buy sale, also (id parcels at the next meeting .in aid of earphones for the Public Hospital. The hostesses were Mesdames Robertson, Sharp, and Claningbold.
