Some employers are reducing staffs. _ Banks are calling in loans. All industries face the prospects of rising costs, coupled with higher taxation and rigid control of costs and prices. Another factor contributing to the weakness of the stock markets is the demand for liquidity ■which has been accentuated by, the cessation of dealings in gilt-edged issues. There is some discontent on the Bradford market over the maximum prices of wool. There is little new business as firms are holding unsold wool and do not care to sell it within the prices the Government laid down. The feeling in Bradford is that the maximum prices are likely to he adjusted upward rather than downward.
