ROXBURGH GIRLS’ CLUB. Seventeen members were present at the Girls’ Club and were honoured with the presence of Mr J. H. Waigth, who gave a most interesting talk on ‘ The Monetary and Banking System— Its Origin and Purpose in National Commerce.’ On behalf of the members Mrs Vernon expressed their appreeiaThe competition, ‘ The Oldest Coin,’ proved very interesting, and was won by Mrs Webster, who presented a penny dated 1807, with Miss Peggy Graham in second place with a shilling dated 1816. and Miss Rae Vernon with a sovereign dated 1839. EMERGENCY PRECAUTIONS. The Mayor of Lawrence, Mr R. F. Batchelor, presided over a meeting called to consider correspondence from the Government and other bodies in connection with the Emergency Precautions Organisation. It was decided to send questionnaires to all householders. The various church committees and the R.S.A. are to be asked how many children could be accommodated in each Ijall, Those present were constituted a committee with power to add, and to include representatives of the Women’s Institute, the R.S.A., and the local clergy. A circular from tho secretary of the Accommodation and Evacuation Committee of the Emergency Precautions Committee, Dunedin, explained that the scheme being prepared was to evacuate children from Dunedin in the event of an emergency, also from other endangered coastal areas. Information was required as to the number of children wlio could be boarded in homes, halls, barns, wool sheds, and other suitable quarters. It was_ explained that it was expected that private homes would accommodate all who were likely to be evacuated. Children of similar age and sex would be billeted in the homes, and teachers would be allotted to the districts. Arrangements concerning supervision and the necessary supplies would be made by the central executive. Where necessary tho committee would arrange for domestic help, and the central committee had already been offered the services of many V.A.D. workers. Finally, althoiighit was sincerely hoped that the necessity for evacuation would not arise, it appeared imperative that a well-laid scheme should be prepared as quickly as possible. Immediately after the meeting of {lie Women’s Institute on Wednesday the Mayor of Roxburgh, Mr F. A. Laloli, convened a meeting to form a committee to procure for the Dunedin Emergency Precautions Committee. After the mayor had explained the purpose of the meeting the following committee was elected; —-The mayor (Mr F. A. Laloli), Dr Gilmour, Mr J. H. Waigth (secretary), Mr J. George, Mr H. Eliott. Mrs J. Bennetts, Mrs Waters, Mr H. Betting. Mr R. Glendenning, Sister Reilly, Nurse Watson, and Mrs L. Wright.

TEVIOT ELECTRIC POWER BOARD. Mr J. George presided at the monthly meeting of the Teviot Electric Power "Board. Others present were Messrs J. H. Waigth, R. T. Kinastpn, T. P. Michele, A. M'Ewan, W. Johnstone, and Dr Gilmour. Accounts, amounting to £579 11s 3d were passed for payment. Revenue for the month amounted to £9lO 15s lid, made up of—power, £603 0s 6d; wiring and showroom, £264 14s sd; cash sales, £6 13s; sundries, £36 Bs. The Chairman reported on a meeting held on August 24 between the resident engineer of the Public Works Department and the board in connection with irrigation for the Ettrick settlers. As a consequence'a meeting was held at Ettrick on August 28 between the Ettrick fruit growers and members of the board, when the follorving proposals agreed upon were submitted to the growers:—(l) Settlers to sink their own wells, the Public Works Department to supply pipes, for which an annual charge to pay interest will be made. (2) Cost of reticulation of power to be arranged by the board as an an-nual-charge, the rate for power ,to be based on a capacity charge of 2s 6d per h.p. per month, plus a unit charge of id per unit.
