PIONEER WOMEN'S MEMORIAL

EXECUTIVE MEETING AND BRIDGE PARTY An executive meeting of the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Association was held on September 12, the president, Dr M'Kinnon, being in the chair. The chief business was to consider future action in view of war conditions. It was decided that, as donations were on an entirely voluntary basis, no change in policy was required, but that active canvassing might be held in abeyance in the meantime. It was decided further that the bridge party, arranged a month previously for September 19, should be proceeded with. This took place in the Tudor Lounge on the due date. In the course of the evening the president, in thanking those present for their support, explained that the committee felt that it would hardly be fair to the management of the Savoy to cancel an engagement which had been entered into so long previously, that it might have meant indefinite postponement, and, moreover, that players attended not so much in a spirit of gaiety, but rather to give support to a cause which they felt _ to be a worthy one—namely the erection of a memorial to be dedicated to our pioneer women settlers, in acknowledgment of the spirit of self-sacrifice and endurance displayed by them in meeting the difficult conditions in which their lives were set. The president then read a short lyric on ‘ The Pioneer Women,’ composed by Mr C. R. Allen, of Dunedin, which is to be set to music. The following organised bodies and individual helpers arranged tables and were responsible for the very satisfactory result achieved: —Registered Nurses’ Association, four tables (Misses Elliott, Muirhead, Holford, Ramsay) ; Women Teachers’ Association (Misses G.
