ENGLISH TROPHY MATCH AUCKLAND BEATS CANTERBURY * jPer United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 24. Canterbury’s challenge for the English Trophy was repulsed by the Auckland Association football representatives at Blandford Park yesterday, when’ the visitors were defeated by 4 goals to 3. Although both teams impressed at intervals with clever combined play, the exchanges for the most part lacked sparkle. The Auckland side gave its worst display this season, the forwards especially being well below form, and with a little luck Canterbury would have taken the honours. The outstanding players for Canterbury wore Sutherland and Gordon. Stevenson (3) and Cleal netted for Auckland, while 11. Smith, Galbraith, and Almond scored for Canterbury. There was an attendance of 2,000.

Holders of the English Football Association Trophy have been: — 1926-30.—Auckland. 1931-32.—Otago. 1933-35.—Auckland. 193G-37.—Canterbury. 1938. —Otago. 1939. —Auckland.
