Geraldine Meeting
WARDRESS PRINCIPAL WINNER ' \ Double to Shanghai Lily Rain early on Friday and Saturday mornings made the Orari course dead and fully 4sec to the mile slower for the second day of the Geraldine meeting than on Thursday, and this change in the going affected the chances of several horses whose form the first day caused them to be well supported. The starting was again indifferent in races in which the fields were big, and on this turning course horses chopped out or left at the barrier had their chances spoiled early. Both Travenna and Flaming Queen showed greatly-improved form on their first day’s running, which was attributed to the softer going, while quite a number of horses who raced prominently on the opening day were unable to handle the change. Shanghai Lily had two wins at the meeting. There was an excellent attendance, but the betting was not good, the investments for the afternoon being £11,397 10s, as compared with £14,281 1 Os, making the total for the meeting £19,271, a decrease of £4,410.

NOTES ON THE EVENTS [By St. Clair.] Travenna, n good favourite for the Second Hurdles, was first to begin, but before a furlong bad been covered Fundy Bay ran to the front, and at the second hurdle was five lengths in front of Travenna, who was follow’d! by Jewish Lad, Bit o’ Blue, and Pink Robe. Going along the back, Fundy Bay, jumping much better than on Thursday, was holding his advantage from Travenna, with ■ a gap of three lengths to Bit o’ Blue and Pink Robe, and Mount Val beginning to make u forward move. At the far turn Fundy Bay was three lengths clear, but at the next fence he made a faulty jump, and Travenna was within three lengths of him turning for home, with Pink Robe, Bit o’ Blue, and Mount Val next. Fundy Bay was still three lengths dear at the last hurdle, but beginning to tire, and hard ridden Travenna just got up to beat him a head.- Mount Val was five lengths away third, with another
gap of four lengths to Pink Robe and Bit o' Blue. Fundy Bay returned his backers on the place machine a big dividend, and there was only £4 invested on his chance to win.
When Ladv Don was disqualified for the Ohapi Handicap on Thursday St. Cloud was declared winner ami not eligible to start in the Wainui Hack Handicap, for which Nigella was made a good favourite, being more than twice as well backed as Great Night, the second selection. The start was a ragged one, and Astronomer, Queen Beth, and Silver Don were badly left. Swingtime and Midguard were first to show out, and racing together they led Guspini, Dark Agnee, and Nigella over the first two furlongs. Swingtime and Midguard, racing abreast, led Guspini and Great Night round the far turn and into the straight. At the distance they were challenged by Guspini, who quickly drew clear and beat Midguard two lengths. Racewell, a neck away, third, just got up to beat Swingtime a head. Great Night was next.
Second Innings was 30s better favourite for the President's Handicap than Wagner, but they were well back at the finish; the latter, after being first out, was the first horse beaten. The start was another ragged one, and Wagner, Glenogil, and The Sandwichman were best away, and led through the straight. Then The Sandwichman took charge and led Glenogil, Wagner, Valantua, Second Innings, and Wardress into and along the back, Wagner had dropped out before going to the far turn, where Valantua ran up into third place to The Sandwichman, Glenogil, Queen Dorothy, and Roy Bun. The Sandwichman was only a head in front of Valantua, with Queen Dorothy, Glenogil, and Wardress turning into the straight. At the distance Valantua displaced The Sandwichman, and they were closely attended by Queen Dorothy, Malmenter, Second Innings, and Wardress. Halfway to tho post Queen Dorothy headed Valantua and then Wardress shot in between Queen Dorothy and Valantua, with Balmenter on the outside almost in line. In a great finish Wardress got up to win by a short half-length from Queen Dorothy, who beat Balmenter and Valantua by heads. Second Innings was at the head of the others, and Nightwings, Glenogil, and Roy Bun were last. With a stronger horseman up Valantua would have finished in the money. He had only £5 invested on his win chance and just twice that amount for a place. Wardress’s performance was an outstanding one, ns on the sharp turn into the straight she met with interference and had to change her course twice in the run home.
Starace was backed down to a short price for the Domain Trot, but again fuiled to see out the journey. He might have finished in the money but for breaking into the straight. Passing By led Starace and Lady Truman through the straight, then Kansas City ran to the front and led to the back from Lady Truman, Starace, Manawai, and Lady Milne. Lady Truman and Monowai led Lady Milne round the far turn, with Starace and Kansas City next. Lady Milne ran up to Manawai entering the straight and won _ very easily by a length from Manawai, who boat Passing By by three lengths. Albertini and Kansas City were next.
Asia was made £4 better favourite than Donadea for. the Gladstone Hack Handicap,, but the former never looked like a winner. Sunny Dawn, Chirp,' and Aggravate were slow to begin and Improvident led along the back from Phenomenal, with Flame Queen, Asia, and Donadea racing together next. Phenomenal was first round the far turn from Improvident, and a little later on Flame Queen ran up into third place. Phenomenal was first into the straight from Flame Queen with Improvident and Donadea next. Flame Queen headed Phenomenal at the distance and beat him home a length Donadea was two lengths away third, then a gap to Improvident. Sunny Dawn, and Asia. This win places Flame Queen out of hack class. Her performance was. in marked contrast to the first day, and she was evidently favoured by the softer and slower track. Asia’s performance, in the view of her Dunedin Guineas’ engagement, was dissappointing, and she does not look ready to run out a solidly run mile.
Grey Night was nearly £4O better fancied than Skyrena for the Stewards' Stakes Handicap, and had every chance but failed to withstand a challenge from Lady Leigh in the run home. From a good start the favourite and Jau Ridd quickly opened up a gap of three lengths from Skyrena and Lady Leigh racing abreast. Grey Night shook off Jan Ridd at the entrance to the straight, with Lady Leigh next. At the distance Lady Leigh had Grey Night’s measure and beat him home three lengths. Skyrena was five lengths away third with Paper Note next The last named appears to have lost all form since winning over six furlongs at Riccarton last month.
Penalised 60yds for her former win, Lady Milne was sent out £4 better fancied for the Winchester Trot than Glenholme, but the handicap proved too much for her. Clive Brook broke and ran across the field at the start and capsized Erin Lad’s driver. Tiny Axworthy led Happy Bird, Equerry, Jerry Parrish, and Glenholme through the straight. Going to the back Tiny Axworthy was three lengths clear, but after passing the six furlong post Gleuholme ran into second place and was followed round the far turn by Equerry and Young Parrish. Tiny Axworthy was joined by Glenholme and Equerry on the home turn, with Glenholme just in behind them. At the distance Jerry Parrish had taken charge, but halfway down the running was challenged bv'Glenholme. who beat him a neck. Equerry was three lengths away third two lengths in front of Lady Milne, who was well clear of Tiny Axworthy.
Shanghai Lily was about £25 better favourite than Capricious for the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap, and after tailing the field to the home turn won well. Prince Ruenalf led through the straight from Knight Commander and Fascinator, then the last-named took charge and led along the back from Prince R-uenalf, Capricious, Merry March, and Knight Commander. Fascinator led round the far turn from Merry March, Capricious, and Prince Ruenalf, and was first into the straight from Capricious, Prince Ruenalf. and Merry March. Then the favourite began to move up, and, getting a very lucky opening between Capricious and Fascinator, won by a length from the former. Merry March was another length away third, then Knight Commander, Master Dingle, and Fascinator. The winner was ridden a very confident race, and she fairly outstayed the opposition over the final furlong.
