Mr E. R. Grace left to-day for Auckland to attend the annual meeting of the Australasian Institute of Secretaries. Mr J. S. M'lnnes travelled to Christchurch to-day. Messrs C. Stanley Smith, S. D. Smith, and W. Easton returned yesterday afternoon from Wellington, where they attended a meeting of the Newspaper Proprietors’ Association. Mr G. R. Steere, who recently retired from the position of manager of’the Brisbane Tramways, and who is returning from a world tour, arrived by the express yesterday afternoon. He was met at the station by the deputy-mayor (Mr D. C. Cameron) and the director of, the City Corporation’s Transport Department (Mr W. H. MacKenzie). , The election, which took place this week for the position of president of the Otago University Students’ Association, resulted in the return of Mr C. E. Hubbard. Mr N. C. Begg , was elected as men’s vice-president, and Miss Eleanor Carswell was returned unopposed as lady vice-president. Mr Hubbard, the new president, has been prominent in University affairs for a number of years, and last Easter was chairman of the New Zearand University Tournament Committee which so successfully carried out the arrangements in connection with the tourna* ment at Dunedin. He has also beep a New Zealand University hockey representative for about five years, while ho has also played for Otago. Dr W. T. M'Fadyen, formerly of Wellington, who for. the past three years has been a refinery chemist for Trinidad Leaseholds Ltd., the largest producers of oil in the British Empire, is on an extended holiday visit to'New Zealand; After receiving at Otago University and Victoria University College, Dr M'Fadyen obtained a doctorate in philosophy at Leeds University. He is at present in Auckland. Mr Edward Gilbertson, J.P., who has held the position of honorary coroner at Wellington for the past seven years, will retire at the end of. the month, Mr T M, M'Kewen, accounts clerk of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, has been appointed accountant to the Southland Hospital Board. There were 25 applicants for the position, which was made vacant through the resignation of Mr E. A, Grant, who was recently appointed secretary of the Vincent Hospital Board at Clyde. A Press Association cable message from London states that Mr Ben Tillett, the veteran Labour leader, aged 78, was quietly married, seven weeks ago to Miss Louise Morgan, aged 45, pF Paddington. Guests at the City Hotel include Mr and Mrs F. C. Thome, Mr A. Wyness, Mr A. M. Barton (Wellington). Mr W. Bgav.en. (Christchurch), Registrations at the Grand Hotel are Mr and Mrs G. R. Steer (Brisbane), Mr 18. W. M'Creath, Dr N. M'Greath (Gore), Miss Stead, Mias M. C. Perrin (Invercargill). Wain’s Hotel guests include Mr R. H. Tomlinson (Wellington), Mr J-Hill-Skinner (Blenheim). On the register at the Carlton Hotel are Mr H. Allison (Palmerston North), Mr S. J. Flewellyn, Mr J. ,L. Mechaelis (Christchurch), Mr P. H, Anderson (Gore).
