TOWNSWOMEN'S GUILD
The monthly meeting of the Townswomen’s Guild was held on Tuesday evening in First Church Hall. Mrs 11. S. Black, president, read extracts from the report of a meeting of the Medical and Public Health Committee of the Emergency Precautions Organisation, on which she is the representative of the guild. , Beds and bedclothes are required to equip an emergency hospital, and the guild has been asked to help. Many members have already promised to give a bed with blankets when required. A letter was read from the Dominion secretary, intimating that the annual conference of the New Zealand Union of Townswomen’s Guilds (Incorporated) will be held in Wellington on November 14, 1939, and asking for the nomination of two delegates from the Dunedin branch. A report was received from Mrs J. A. Sim stating that a class in motor car servicing has been arranged, and will be held on Saturday afternoons at Herbert’s Servicing Station Ltd. Mrs W. B. Taverner reported that a number of members wished to attend an evening class in cooking if this could be arranged. A number of members are already studying catering and cooking at the Home Science School on the invitation of Professor A. G. Strong, and have had the privilege of watching and helping to prepare meals at Studholme House for about 60 to 70 persons. A most interesting address was given by Mrs J. H. Harris on air raid precautions, and the evacuation of women and children in London during the last September crisis. She said many classes were organised to instruct the people how to distinguish the different types of gas, and how to act when threatened by gas attacks; also how to deal with accidents arising from bombshells, such as wounds from flying missiles and debris, extensive burns and shock.
