OBITUARY

MR JOHN GARRATT An earlv resident of Dunedin in Mr John Garratt,, who for many years lived in Roslyn, passed away recently at Mayfield, Canterbury, aged 83 years. Mr Garratt was born in Tillicoultry, Scotland, and came to New Zealand with" his parents when hfe was five years of age. His family took up residence in this city. In 1890 Mr Garratt married Miss Louisa Hill, of Melbourne. He was an employee of Messrs Reid and Gray Ltd. for. about 50 years,,.and he was highly respected by all the employees, with whom he was associated in every movement to better their conditions. The deceased was widely known in the city, his home in Roslyn was always open for the entertainment of little children, many middle-aged persons to-day remember-” ing with gratitude the delightful children’s parties organised by him and his wife. He was a keen bowler, and was a past-president of the Roslyn Club. Up to the time of his death he residedwfth his daughter, Mrs J. W. Kingan, of Mayfield. His wife predeceased him several years ago.

MR D. I. POPPELWELL A Gore Press Association telegram records the death of Mr Dugald Louis Poppelwell, who waa Mayor of Gore for 10 terms. Progressive works carried out during his early terms of office included the construction of the Gore traffic bridge, the introduction of drainage, Water, and lighting schemes. He was a steward of the Racing Club for 42 years, and was connected with numerous organisations at various times. Ho was the -first president of the Gore Chamber of Commerce and was a recognised authority on floral, fauna, and Maori traditions. He secured for Gore the largo bush domain at Hokonui Hills from the Government. He was the senior member of the Gore Bar and president for a period of the Southland branch of the Law Society. He is survived by his widow and family of three sons and two daughters.
