PENINSULA COUNTY
COUNCIL'S MONTHLY MEETING The monthly meeting of the Peninsula County Council was held at Portobello yesterday, the following being present: Crs J. W. Harbrow (chairman), D. Rutherford, W. V. Sturmer, W. Brookman, T. S. Edmonds, J. J. Nyhon, R. G. Habershon, M. Geary, and D- J. S. Robertson. CORRESPONDENCE. Mr F. G. Carter, Port Chalmers, wrote drawing the attention of the council to a culvert on his property at Broad Bay, which had fallen in and caused a blockage.—lt was decided to carry out the work. The Secretary of the North-east Harbour Ratepayers’ and Householders’ Association wrote asking the council to attend to an exposed pipe in Dickson street, Macandrcw Bay.—lt was decided to instruct the owners to bury the pipe to the required depth. Mr Alexander M’Millan. Macanclrew Bay, wrote stating that there was an underground stream running through his property and a landslide had commenced, putting his house in danger. He asked that the stream be turned into a Maori drain 30 yards away.— The clerk’s letter advising that the council could not accept responsibility for the matter was endorsed.
Mr W. G. Kindley wrote stating that the bank in front of his section facing Glengyle street had slipped and was liable to undermine the frontage of his section. A stone wall was necessary to prevent further slips.—The matter was referred to Mr Stunner for a repot. Miss A Francis. Macanclrew Bay, wrote drawing attention to the fact that damage had been done to the fence on her property on Marine Parade by lorries backing against it while trees were being removed. She offered two or three feet of her property to enable a permanent improvement to he made. —The offer was declined with thanks. Mr. O. G Miller, Dunedin, asked the council .if it would place a load of screenings on a small roadway from the road to a section owned by his brother. —Received.
Mr J. L. Love was "ranted permission to lay an iron pipe across the channel in Cornwall street. Waverley, ho that an outing would he made for a lorry.
Mrs M. I. Mitchell (Upper Harbour) and Mrs IT. S. Evans.' jun. ("Reach street), were granted permission to install septic tanks on their properties. Mr E. W Taylor, Broad Bay, wrote asking the council to to an unprotected hank at the junction of District and School _ roads, as it was a danger to pedestrians and traffic.—The matter was deferred to the next meeting. / The secretary of the Metropolitan Licensing Authority (Mr R. A ; Johnston) advised that the authority had considered a report from the Peninsula Motor Service as to why its passenger service was suspended on Jnlv 25 and 2(5, during the heavy snow. and. in the opinion of the authority, the explanation was a reasonable one. No further action, therefore, would ho taken.— Received.
Mrs M Karetai. on behalf of the resirlents of Otakou. wrote asking the council to make a donation towards a memorial gate to he erected at the entrance to the public buildings in morn orv of their Maori aneostnts and the first Europeans in the district.—Tt was decided to make no donation to the pro'ept. Mr A E FTa’-dman. farm managmat St Joseph's Omhanaup. wrote askins the council if it would open aAid form Forth street. Wave Hey. as it would hp of great value to the orphanage.—The chairman secretary, and Crs Stunner and Rrookmnn were instmeted to examine the proposed road, with power to act The hoard’s representative on the No. 17 District Highways Council (Air P. Kellarl advised that the following amounts had been provided in the main highways estimate :—Dunedin-Porto-hello High road, maintenance £1.437, improvements £soosubsidy £3 for £1; Duncdih-llighcliff via Tomahawk, maintenance £528. improvements £375, subsidy £3 for £l.—Received.
The secretary of the North-east Harbour Ratepayers’ and Householders’ Association (Mr Roy Hook) wrote asking if the council would consider a further 21 years’ lease on the hall site and recreation ground at Macandrew Bay, with perpetual right of renewal for a period of 21 years at a charge of 10s perffiunum.—ln connection with the matter Mr E. G. Bewlcy waited on the council, and the clerk was instructed to take the steps necessary to advertise tenders for the lease. GENERAL. It was decided that employees of the council volunteering for war service should be given leave, and that their positions should be kept open for them. The Ranger reported that he had impounded two cows that had been found wandering during the month. . The report of the county clerk (Mi J. Seaton) on work done during the month was adopted.
