The corresponding totals for September. 1934-38, were respectively 711, 680, 522, 421, and 379. It was probably a vain hope that the war would not last long enough for the boys who were at school to he drawn into it.
They would, of course, be only too quick to serve if they had the chance. The winter games ended with the Rugby match against Christchurch Boys’ High School, which this school won, and with the tour of two Association Football teams to Greymouth. The latter played two games at Greymouth and two at Christchurch, winning the former and losing the latter. In spite of a bad defeat by Wellington College, the First Fifteen had a very successful season, playing six school games and winning four. The report was, adapted. —King’s High.— The rector of the King’s High School (Mr D. S. Chisholm) reported that the school resumed on Tuesday, September 12, with a roll of 299, one junior having left to take up a position. The corresponding totals for 1936, 1937, and 1938 were 190, 238, and 291 respectively. Mr R. C. Tuck, 8.A., took up duties at the beginning of this term, and staffing arrangements had now resumed the normal course. The report referred to the opening ot the new Assembly Hall on August 15, and to the celebration of Arbor Day. Mr W. J. Thomson had presented three trees for planting at the school. Pictures had been presented to the school by Messrs D. M. Burn and G. Stratton.
The report was adopted'. —Otago Girls’ High.— The principal of the Otago Girls’ High School (Miss M. H. M. Km£) reported that tho roll total was 475—a1l frec-place pupils. Tho roll numbers for September 1933 to 1938 were 516, 526, 535, and 516 respectively. The report referred to various school activities, dealing mostly with sport and tho medical examination of the pupils toward the end of the second term. The results of this examination by Dr Rippin showed that this practice was much needed in secondary schools. Brief reference was made at the opening of the term to the outbreak of war, impressing on the pupils the advice of the British Prime Minister to each citizen of the Empire to “ get on with his or her own job ” as the best immediate way of helping in the crisis. Emergency clearance would be practised from time to time. The report was adopted.
