NOTES ON THE RACING

Pink Rube was made a much better favourite than either Mount Val or Travenna for the First Hurdles Handicap, but the first-named had to strike her colours to Jewish Lad, ridden by H. W. Hibberd, who was having his first ride over fences. Ballad led King Icel, Jewish Lad, and Pink Robe over the initial hurdle, where Travenna made a bad jump. At tho next fence Ballad ran off, and at the stand hurdle Jewish Lad was just in front of Pink Robe, with King Icel and Travenna next. Pink Robe then ran up to Jewish Lad, and the pair led King Icel and Travenna along the back, with King Icel handy and Travenna at the head of the others. King Icel ran up to the leaders rounding the far turn, but soon dropped back. Pink Robe was being hard ridden at the home turn, and Jewish Lad led her over the last hurdle and stayed on to win by a good length. Travenna was two lengths away third, four lengths clear of King Icel, then came Bit o’ Blue. Fundy Bay fell at the second fence. The St. Cloud-Fascinator bracket was backed down to an odds-on chance in tho Ohapi Handicap, with Muriet the best favoured of the others. St. Cloud and Lady Don were the first out from Nigella and Muriet. After a furlong and a-hslf St. Cloud took charge and led round the far turn and across the top from Lady Don, Nigella, and Muriet. St. Cloud was still a good length clear turning for homo, but Lady Don caught her halfway down the running and beat her by two lengths, Nigella a similar margin away third, then Fascinator, Muriet, and Great Night, who was last away from a bad start.
• Only Silver Streak and Wagner were Withdrawn from the Geraldine Cup, and Wine Card was made a slightly better favourite than Spartan, but neither was seen at the finish. Valantua, Wine Card, and Cape Gabo were slow to begin, and Spartan led through the straight from Night Dress and The Sandwichman. As the field turned into the back stretch Glenogil took charge and led Spartan Gay Rebel, The Sandwichman, and Roy Bun. At the far turn Night Wings moved up and followed Glenogil and Spartan across the top. Glenogil was first into the straight from Gay Rebel, Roy Bun, Night Wings, The Wrecker, and. Second Innings, Night Wings being carried out wide. At the distance Glenogil was done with, and Roy Bun and The Sandwichman drew clear. Then Second Innings put in a good run in the centre of the course, but it was too late, and Roy Bun won by a length from The Sandwichman, who beat Second Innings by a quarter-of a length. Passaform -was fourth, then came Gay Rebel, Wine Card ,and Night lyings.
Star Ace was a much better favourite than the Lady Truman-Marque bracket for the Geraldine Trot, and had every chance, taking charge four furlongs from homo, but then failed to stay. Lady Truman led through the straight from Passing By, Star Ace, Kansas City, and Waikari Chief, but turning to the back Passing By and the favourite went to the front and were racing clear of Kansas City and Marque going to the far turn. Then Star Ace took charge and led Passing By, Kansas City, and Marque across the top. Passing By just headed Star Ace on the home turn, with Marque and Kansas City next. Passing By broke at the distance, and Marque drew right away to win easily by eight lengths from Kansas City and Star Ace, with Lady Truman, Waikari Chief, and Tokalon next.
Flame Queen was slightly better favoured than either King Gustavo or Phenomenal for the Raukapuka Hack Handicap, but starting from the extreme outside, had to bo ridden hard over the first two furlongs to get positioned, and failed to stay on. From a good start, Ohmaha and Phenomenal were the first to show out after a furlong had been covered and then Phenomenal drew well clear and led King Gustavo, Fcrriby, and Flame Queen round the far turn. Racing across the top King Gustavo joined Phenomenal and Femby headed Flame Queen. King Gustavo drew well clear from Phenomenal and Ferriby on the home turn, then the last-named challenged at the distance, and heat King Gustavo by a length, Donadea two lengths away third, then Aggravate, Flame Queen, and Phenomenal.
Capricious and Shanghai Lily carried nearly two-thirds of the pool invested on the Belfield Hack Handicap, the former being £5 better favoured, and they had the finish to themselves. Capricious, starting next the rails, and Night Pal led Merry March through the straight, then Night Pal showed out for a few strides, but quickly gave way to AVardress and Knight Commander, who led along the back clear of Merry March and Night Pal. Capricious, wl/o met with interference passing the seven furlong post, then began to move up again, and at the far turn was lying third to AVardress and Knight Commander. These three were followed into the straight by Merry March, Night Pal. and Shanghai Lily. At the distance Capricious was in charge, but Shanghai Lily, finishing very strongly, just got up to beat her by half a length. AVardress was two lengths away third, well clear of Knight Commander, Merry March, and Night Pal. * * * * Axspear was much better favoured than Tiny Axworthy for the Orari Trot, and scored nicely, being the first favourite to win during the afternoon. Tiny Axworthy' and Cirrus failed to begin smartly, and Royal Thread led through the straight from Clive Brook, who dropped out at the end of throe furlongs, mid Royal Thread was joined by Glenholme as they raced along the back two lengths clear from Axspear and Jerry Parrish. Royal Thread was done with at the home turn, and Glenholme led the favourite and Jerry Parrish into the straight. At the distance Axspear caught Glenholme, and won bv a length from Jerry Parrish, who beat Glenholme by four lengths, then came Equerry, (Royal Thread, and Lady Milne. » » * • Gay Parade and Skyrena carried over three-quarters of the pool invested on the Squatters’ Handicap, the former being £54 better favoured and leading all the way scored the easiest win of the day. Skyrena and Swordstick were slow to jump out, and Ga.v Parade, starting from next the rails, with Queen Dorothy, were quickly in front, and Gay Parade was first into the straight from Skvrena, Queen Dorothy, and Silver Streak. Then Gay Parade drew right away, ami won easily by three lengths from Queen Dorothy, who beat Toro Koura by a neck. Skvrena was a bead away fourth, and Silver Streak next. Backers of the winner lost money by supporting him on the place machine.
