The Chief Postmaster (Mr N. R* M’lsaac), who has been on a visit to the North Island, returned by this afternoon’s lx press. Mr Percy Coyle, of Wellington, ha* returned from Australia.
Dr S. R. B. Cooke, formerly of Hamilton and Thanles, has been appointed head research professor of metallurgy; at the Montana School of Mines, Butte, Montana, United States. For the'past four years Dr Cooke has been assistant research professor at the Missouri School of Mines, United States. Sir Osborn Holmdeh, K.8.E., of London, who was director of the Interallied Chartering Executive during the Great War, is visiting Christchurch, accompanied by Lady. Holmden. Sir Osborn served on a number of other committees and-was a British delfegata at the Peace Conference. He is Do* puty-lieutenimt of the City of London, a Commander of the Crown (Belgium), Commander of the Crown of Italy, an. Officer of the Legion d’Honneur, and Commander of St. Olaf (Norway). Ho, is also past grand steward and past grand deacon in. Freemasonry. Messrs W. I. Perriam, A. A. Parkhill, W. H. Jolly, G. R. M'Donald, and D. Murray left for Wellington this morning to take part in the North vj South Island Rugby match and All Black trials. Mr A. W. Wesney was a through passenger from Invercargill for the same purpose. _ Mr D. M. Spedding (Otago) and Mr L. R. Lopdell (Southland) were passengers by this morning’s express bound for Wellington, where they will attend a meeting of the council of the New; Zealand Rugby Union. „, • Mr S. Wood left Dunedin to* day to attend a meeting of the council of the New; Zealand Law Society at Wellington. ... ’ ’ w Advice has been received in Wellington of the death at Cambridge this morning of the Rev. M. W. P. Lascelles, president-elect of the Baptist Union of New Zealand, aged 76. During the Great War he served a« Y.M.C.A. commissioner in England; France, and Egypt. He was president of the Baptist Union of New Zealand and the Missionary Society in 1919. In 1922 he was appointed secretary of th* union, with at Wellington, and held this position for 16 years’, relinquishing it to become pastor at Cambridge.—Press Association. Mr W.
