PRESIDENT TO REQUEST REVISION JOINT SESSION OF SENATE AND HOUSE WASHINGTON, September 19. (Received September 20, at 10 a.m.) PresiderC Roosevelt has announced that he is planning to appear in person at a Joint session of . the Senate and House at 2 p.m. on Thursday, and that he will request revision of the neutrality law. Received September 20. at 11 a.m.) The Yokohama correspondent of the American Press Association states that a former counsellor at the Japanese Embassy in Washington. Mr Yakichiro Suma. said; “ Unlike 1914, the Americans arc now definitely anti-German, and because they are not an emotional people I believe it only a matter of time before the United States goes to war.” AUSTRALIAN SURPLUS SUGAR SOLD TO BRITISH GOVERNMENT CANBERRA, September 20. (Received September 20, at 12.5 p.m.) The balance of Australia's surplus production of raw sugar will be sold to Britain- by the Queensland Government through the British Sugar Control Board. The arrangement completed for sale involves 290,000 tons of raw sugar, and the net return will bo about £lO a ton, f.o.b. mills. QUEEN ON WAR WORK (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, September 19. (Received September 20, at 11 a.m.) The Queen has organised a work party to make bandages and garments, etc., for the central hospital supplies service under the joint board of the British Red Cross Society and the Order of St. John. Her Majesty will take an active part in the work herself, and will be assisted by members of the Royal domestic staff.. GERMAN CONSUL LEAVES PASSAGE ON DUTCH STEAMER [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 20. The German Consul for New Zealand, Herr E. llamm, accompanied by Frau Hamm and their two children and members of the Consulate staff, left Wellington this morning by the Netherlands steamer Tasman on their return to Germany. The Swiss Consul, Dr W. Schmid, who will represent Germany in New Zealand, and Mr J. W. Heenan, Undersecretary of the Department of Internal Affairs, were among those farewelling the party.
