UNION-CASTLE LINER’S. RECORD. The most recently completed of tho Union-Castle Company’s new fleet of motor ships, the Pretoria Castle, 17,392 tons gross, reached Southampton _ recently on the conclusion of her maiden voyage. Sister ship to the Durban Castle, she was feted at the various African ports which she visited. Tho vessel broke the record for the passage between Durban and Port Elizabeth, and averaged over 18 knots' for the voyage home, a speed in excess of that attained by the older mail ships. It was fortunate that she had some reserve, for in consequence of having to proceed into drydodk at. Durban following a mishap at Lourenco Marques, she was a week late in leaving that port. However, when she reached Southampton she was only two days behind schedule, having made up five of the lost days. This is a worthy achievement, particularly in view of the fact that she made her scheduled calls. The entry into service of the Pretoria Castle .marked the-completion of the Union-Castle Company’s extensive shipbuilding programme. Under this 14 ships have been added to the fleet since. 1935, all built by Messrs Harland and Wolff Ltd., at Belfast, their aggregate tonnage being over 189,000 gross. Three are large passenger and mail liners, four intermediate passenger liners, six fast refrigeated fruitcarriers, and one a small coasting vessel. In addition, five of the mail liners have been re-engined and improved. AT OTHER PORTS. WELLINGTON, September 19.—Arrived: Kara (9.55 a.m.), from New Plymouth.
