MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly meeting of the council of the University of Otago was held yesterday afternoon, and attended by the Chancellor (Mr W. J. Morrell), Messrs James Wallace, F. W. Mitchell, W. R. Brugh, J. Robertson, S. Rice, ,T, Steel, L. D. Ritchie, Sir James Allen, Dr R. J. T. Bell, Dr James Fitzgerald, Dr Carmalt-Jones, Miss M. W; May, and Dr Stanley Batchelor. CARNEGIE CORPORATION. The Hon. Secretary of the New Zealand Carnegie Corporation Advisory Committee wrote stating that the activities of his committee would terminate at the end of this year, when tbe funds would have been expended. He presumed that if the members of the A.C.E. staff could not be continued they would be advised of the position. The Chancellor explained that the vote was for five years, and that the period had now expired. When the grant had been made it was thought that the community would be so convinced of the value of the experiment that it would take the means to continue it. The matter was referred to the Finance and Home Science Committees to act. APPOINTMENTS. Mr H. FI. Ferguson, bon. secretary of the Lecturers’ Associatiou, wrote notifying the council that Dr Billing had been reappointed representative on the Professorial Board, and that Miss E. O. Campbell, Rev. W. A. CurzonSiggers, and himself had been elected representatives on the Board of Control, The association was of opinion that no lecturers’ representative should be convener of the Lodgings Committee. It was resolved to ask the board to submit a scheme for the working of the Lodgings Committee. The Secretary of the Hospital Board wrote stating that Dr Murray M'George had been reappointed for a further term of 12 months as R.M.O. —Noted. REFUGEE SCIENTISTS. The Registrar of the Canterbury College wrote submitting a memorandum from Professor White recommending that the four colleges should make a combined effort to provide £SOO per annum for the appointment of a refugee of high academic standing to lecture in the four centres. The Chancellor said that the outbreak of war had made a difference, and it would probably be difficult now to carry such a scheme into effect. Dr Bell said that the Professorial Board had considered the proposal, and in their view the project was impracticable. A motion to this effect was carried. ADULT EDUCATION. Tlie Registrar of the University »of New Zealand advised that the amount allocated for adult education in Otago for 1940 was £1,900, plus £3OO for women’s work. He asked that a scheme of work be prepared and submitted, and that any deficit on the W.E.A. account this year should be the first charge on the grant for 1940. The Chancellor said that the amount was loss 'favourable than the council had hoped for, and after discussion the matter was referred to tlie Advisory Committee. HOME SCIENCE DIPLOMA. The Professorial Board pointed out (hat it was not possible to include Spanish in the optional subjects for entrance to homo science diploma course, as Spanish was not a subject for the university entrance or the school certificate examination» There was, however, no objection to including Maori. —Approved. BOOK PRIZE. Mr M. V. Bryan King, hon. secretary of the Otago branch of the Institute of Chemistry, submitted an offer from the institute of the annua] award of a book prize of the value of £1 11s fid for firstyear science students in chemistry.—Accepted with thanks.
A fine of one penny for missing an easy catch was quite usual in the early days of cridket.
