MAJOR LARCOMBE RETIRES
Major Dudley Larcombe, ex-soldier and market gardener, and for 14 years benevolent dictator of the world’s most famous tennis tournament, was to retire this month. The announcement was made at the Wimbledon tennis dinner by Sir SamueJ Hoare, president of the L.T.A. Major Larcombe, who is 60 years old, has been secretary and manager of the AlLEnglaud Lawn Tennis Club at Wimbledon since 1925, but for several years has been in bad health. He had a long leave of absence before this year’s championships, and resumed his' duties a week before the opening day. The new secretary and manager is not likely to be chosen until Major Larcombe retires. Major Larcombe’s success in dealing with temperamental tennis stars is his immense patience. He has been a professional Militiaman for seven years with the Guernsey Light Infantry; gamemaster at ißoeliampton; and a market gardener.
