The Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) returned yesterday afternoon from Wellington. Hon. W. Do wide Stewart, who is on a visit to Wellington, is expected to return at the end of next ween.
The appointment of Mr J. P. Rutherford as Deputy-Controller and AuditorGeneral has been gazetted. Mr W. A. Kilner, of the Tourist Department, Dunedin, has been appointed acting district manager of the Invercargill branch, talcing the place of Mr W. A. Pickford, who has been appointed manager of the Te Anau Hotel. Dr D. G. M'Alillan, M.P., returned by the express from the north this afternoon.
Mr S. Ritchie, Conciliation Commissioner, was a through passenger from Invercargill to Christchurch by this morning’s express. Dr Crawford C. APCullough, Fort William, Ontario, Canada, a former president of Rotary International, is to visit New Zealand early next month. Dr M'Cullough' is a physician and surgeon. He has had extensive experience in the clinics of Europe and America, and is recognised as an eminent specialist in eye, ear, nose, and throat affections. Ho is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Ontario and Canadian Medical Associations. Dr M'Cullough is a charter member of the Rotary Club of Fort William, and a past president of that club. He served as governor of the district in 1919-1920. He served as first vice-president of Rotary International in 1920-21, and was president in 1921-22. Dr M'Cullough will be in Wellington on October 3. He will visit Christchurch ami Dunedin, and then go to Auckland by way of Rotorua.
Air W. D. Sutherland completed last night 10 years as honorary secretary of the Port Chalmers Old Identities’ Association. He did not seek re-elec-tion. It was resolved to minute appreciation of his services.
At the annual meeting of the Port Chalmers Old Identities’ Association last night the matter of taking over the new quarters in the Pioneer Hall was discussed. It was finally decided to defer the matter until the deed of transfer had been completed. The Port Chalmers Brigade was called out to-day to a fire at the residence of Mr C. B. Medder in Queen’s Drive road. A back bedroom, was gutted. Air A. H. Al'Kane (Labour) was elected unopposed to the Greymouth Borough Council to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Air A. H. Paterson. Owing to the international situation the Citizens’ Committee decided not to contest the election.—Press Association.
A Press Association cable message from New York states that the Australian, Air Donald Thomson, has resigned his Rockefeller fellowship and is returning to Australia for war service. A Press Association cable from London states that, as Lieutenant-colonel Rait Kerr, the secretary of the Alarylebone Cricket Club, and the assistantsecretary (Air R. Aird) are engaged in national service work, Air W, Findlay has resumed the secretaryship, assisted by Sir Pelham Warner. Guests at the City Hotel include Air A. W, Holmes (England). Air P. F. Stevens, Air and Airs S. W. Sanders (Auckland), Air J. Walmsley. Mr Clarke Jphnston (Wellington), Mr K. Miller, Air H. Taylor (Christchurch). On the register at Wain’s Hotel are Air E. it.
