POLICE COURT

FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. Charles Edward Maguire, a statutory first offender, was fined 12s (id, in default 24 hours’ imprisonment. LICENSING BREACH. Thomas M‘Gorva Nelson was fined 10s and costs for being found unlawfully on licensed premises. FINE IMPOSED. A fine of 30s and costs was imposed upon Arthur William Henry Reynolds for casting offensive matter’in a public l>laCe ‘ CHIMNEY FIRE. Arthur Gregory M'Carthy was fined 5s and costs for allowing a chimney to catch fire. SUNDAY TRADING. Thomas Grcaney pleaded jniilty to* a charge of Sunday trading, Senior-ser-geant Glaasen stating that the defendant had been three times jireyiously before the court for a similar offence. The defendant gave an undertaking to the magistrate that the practice Would cease, and was fined £2 and costs. # NEIGHBOURS’ QUARREL. Flora M'lnnes pleaded guilty to a charge of striking Hetty M'Grath. Senior-sergeant Claasen said that the charge arose from a neighbours’ quarrel. Ordinarily, the police did not bring neighbours’ quarrels before the court, but the assault took place in a public place and was viewed by witnesses. The defendant had a with a neighbour about an 11-ycar-old child, and this resulted in an altercation, defendant striking the neighbour a fairly violent blow on the car. .Defendant said the woman refused to let her little girl go down a right-of-way and smacked her. Defendant said she was afraid she lost her temper, the other woman having used bad language to her. The Magistrate adjourned the case for 12 months, conditional upon defendant being of good behaviour. CHARGES ADJOURNED. Henry John Sandle and Rewi Alexander Silby were jointly charged with behaving in a disorderly manner in a public place, Mr C. J. L. White appearing for Sandle and Mr 0. G. Stevens for Silby. Mr White pointed out that the case arose out of a quarrel 'between the defendants, who were neighbours. Counsel suggested that the case might be adjourned for 12 months, as there was little or no likelihood of the trouble recurring, Sandle having now left the neighbourhood, Mr Stevens supported Mr White s remarks, and the Magistrate said it was not an edifying thing for respectable men to behave in too manner it was said the defendants had done. He did not propose entering convictions, however, but would adjourn the case for 12 months, conditional upon each defendant keeping the peace in the meantime. UNLICENSED WIRELESS. For being in possession of an unlicensed radio set, Sidney William John Hendry was fined 30s and costs, and a charge against John Elliott Rowe was dismissed subject to payment of court costs (10s). CYCLISTS FINED. Percy Blackburn and John Fitzgerald were each fined 5s and costs for riding on unlighted bicycles. A charge against Blackburn of failing to stop for a traffic inspector was withdrawn. A plea of not guilty was entered by James William Bennefc to charges of riding a bicycle without hands on the handlebars and using indecent language. -Senior-sergeant Claasen stated that the defendant had been riding along in Lower High street without having his hands on the handlebars of his bicycle. Inspector Dickel followed him in a car along Cumberland street, and finally to St. Andrew street, where the defendant went into a butchery. When he did not appear within a reasonable time the inspector laid hold of the bicycle and the defendant reappeared, using very indecent language. Questioned, he gave an incorrect name.— Evidence given by Inspector Dickel was corroborated by another witness. Defendant was fined £2 and costs on the charge of usuing indecent language, in default 48 hours’ imprisonment, and on the other charge he was convicted and discharged. UNREGISTERED DOGS. For being in possession of unregistered dogs Percy Arnold Blomfield, James Francis Tobin, and Robert George Ferguson were convicted without penalty. MOTORISTS CHARGED. Donald Graham and John Evander Mackay were charged with supplying false information as to age to a traffic inspector, and were each fined 10s and costs. Harold Fleetwood Jefferies, who was charged with driving without due care and attention, was fined 10s and costs. For operating an unlicensed goods service Arthur Leslie Simpkins was convicted and ordered to pay court costs (10s). For driving a heavy traffic vehicle at a speed exceeding 25 lAiles per hour Allan Berland was fined 25s and costs. Ernest Frederick Paris was fined 5s and costa for parking a car for more than 15 minutes.

Sydney Poole was fined 5s and costs for 'parking a ear for more than 15 minutes. and for having no warrant of fitness he was ordered to pay court costs (10s). _ • For exceeding a speed of 30 miles per hour Graham Scott was fined 15s and costs and Kenneth Skinner 25s and costs.

Alexander Rust pleaded not guilty to a charge of exceeding 30 miles an hour. —Evidence was heard, and the case was unfinished when the adjournment was taken.
