BASKETBALL

[By Defence.]

West Otago v. Otago. The Otago G grade, accompanied by the president, Mrs W. B. Taverner, and Mrs D. Binning, travelled to Tapanui last week-end to take part in the annual fixture against West Otago. The visit was a very enjoyable one, and the game an interesting one. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea at the conclusion of the game, and at a dance in the evening, when Mrs Kane expressed the pleasure of the sub-asso-ciation in again welcoming the Otago C grade team to the district. West Otago opened the score with a fine shot by I. Walker. Otago C grade gained the advantage in the centre, transferring play to the forward area, where, however, the shot at goal failed. "West Otago defence cleared, and an attractive movement a 'minute later resulted in the second score being made. A period of up-and-down play followed, Otago C grade having several unsuccessful attempts at goal, but West Otago, with a great burst of play, added four more goals. The Otago defence inaugurated a good movement, the ball being handled by each player until the forwards converted, thus opening the score for the visiting side. This' goal seemed to give confidence to the Otago players, who, during the remaining period of the first hhlf, controlled the play and succeeded in reducing its opponents’ lead until half-time was called, when the score was 9 all. From the opening whistle in the second half West Otago forced the pace. It played strongly throughout, shot accurately, and again gained a substantial lead before play had advanced very far. The defenders of both teams played particularly well and repulsed many promising movements. The Otago forwards were outplayed hy their opponents, and during this Jialf found it very difficult to work the ball into good shooting positions. West Otago gradually increased its tally until time was called, with the score reading; West Otago 19, Otago C grade 12. I, Walker (West Otago) was very prominent throughout, playing a consistently good game and shooting very accurately. Annual Tournaments. . The third, fourth, and fifth grade annual tournaments were held last Saturday at Logan Park. Weather conditions were excellent, and the play was of a very even nature, the teams gaining the lowest number of points comparing very favourable with those gaining the highest. Congratulations are extended to Ravensboumo third grade on winning the third grade banner, to.Ravenshonrne fourth grade, and Gregg’s on jointly winning the fourth grade, and to Mosgiel District High School on winning the fifth grade. The following tables show the points ytuii by the competing teams; —
