Mr and Mrs Garth Thompson were visitors to Invercargill for the weekendl. Mrs Irwin Hunter has returned to Queenstown after a two months' stay with her daughter, Mrs Mark Hanan. Mrs Frank Buttle, who has been visiting Nelson and the West Coast, has returned home. Dunedin callers at New Zealand House, London, included Mrs C. and Miss L. Downie. Miss Florence Miles, who has been spending the vacation in Dunedin, returned to Rangiora on Monday. Misses Jean King, Zoe Brewster, Ella Bath, and Esme Ussher, who have been staying with Mrs G. H. Ussher, of Timaru, have returned to Dunedin. Miss W. M'Quilikan has returned from studying at Oxford University and has taken up a position on the staff at Columba College. Mrs Ballard and Miss Jean Ballard, who were the guests of Mrs J. Simpson, Elizabeth''Street, Timaru, have returned to Dunedin. Mong and Miss Billie Munro, of St; Clair, who have been the guests of Mrs C. Lowe, of Upper Riccarton, Christchurch, have returned home. Mrs E. H. Hargreaves, of Christchurch, is visiting Dunedin with her son, who is on holiday from England. They will return north at the end of the week, when the latter will leave for England to rejoin his regiment. The marriage of Mr H. G. M'Quade, of Oamaru, and Miss Berniee Malcolm, of Dunediri, took place quietly in Oamaru on Saturday evening. Mr and Mrs M'Quade will make their home at Awamoa, Oamaru. Miss Dorothy M'lntosh, of " Manorside," Moa Creek, who has been teaching in Oamaru for the past six months, left by plane for Masterton, where she has been appointed to the staff of Solway College. At the usual card afternoon of the St. Kilda Ladies' Bowling Club opportunity was taken by the president (Mrs Belcher) to say farewell and make a ' small presentation on behalf of the members to Mrs Harrould, a member of the club who is leaving for Australia. Miss Yvonne Champtaloup is the secretary of the Dunedin St. Hilda's i O.G.A. in London. The first reunion < —henceforward it is hoped to have an i annual one—will be held shortly, when < some sort of programme will no doubt ' be formulated. Mrs H. L. Paterson gave a 5 o’clock party on Saturday at her home in Roslyn in honour of her son, Mr N. Paterson, who left on Monday for Vigrani, where he is to complete his Air Force training.

Miss A. B. Fletcher, of Dunedin, one of 'the three New Zealand passengers not accounted for after the torpedoing of the Athenia, is a sister of Mrs Edward Roberts, of High gate, Roslyn, with whom in her anxiety much sympathy is felt.

To honour Miss .Joy Held, Mrs J. Gilkison gave a mah-jongg party at her home in Musselburgh on Monday afternoon. Another party for Miss Reid was given by Mrs A. de Beer yesterday afternoon! at her home in Scarba street, Roslyn.

The members of the Federation of University Women (Otago branch) met in the Vedic Cafe on Saturday morning for their annual tea party. The gathering numbered 25. Miss M. May, the president, extended a special welcome ,to Miss Maureen Frengley, of Chriftbhilrch, an erstwhile memher who has been in India for the past six years. Watea Croquet Club. A successful, afternoon tea concert I arranged by the Watea Croquet Club was held last Wednesday in the St. Clair Presbyterian Church Hall. A large attendance listened to the following programme:—Pianoforte solo, Miss M'Caul; recitations, Misses H. Smith and J. Ferens; songs and trio—Mesdames Briggs, Whitworth, and Miss Bain, accompanist Miss Meda Paine; play-reading—Mesdames Holmes, Cameron, Fairbairn, Colvin, and Miss Farnie. The president, Mrs Wilson, thanked all who had_ contributed to the success of the function. Business and Professional Women's Club. * The fortnightly meeting was held in the Tudor on Monday. Mr C. Harris, the speaker for the evening, had previously entertained the members with some of his experiences on a cruise to the South Seas in the ketch Water Lily, the crew of which were some half-dozen adventure-loving New Zealanders. With further episodes of the journey, the wreck of the boat, and return of the adventurers by devious ways to Auckland. Mr Harris sustained the interest of his audience throughout. Miss Greenwood, in a few happily chosen words, expressed the thanks of club members. Music Circle, Otago Women's Club. ' Music of the Sea ' was the subject dealt with by the music circle of the Otago Women's Club at its monthly meeting. Miss Emilie Logic presided over a large audience, and the subject f was introduced by Mrs Wakefield. Holmes, who read quotations and poems dealing with the sea by Byron, Longfellow, Hood, Wordsworth, and Kipling.

The following musical items were given:—Piano solo, ‘ Calm Seas and Prosperous Voyage’ ‘(Mendelssohn), Mrs G. H. Elliffe; songs—‘ The Sea ’ (Schubert), ‘Nightfall at Sea’ (Montagu Phillips), and ‘Sea Gipsy’ (Michael Head), sung by Mrs G. Black, accompanied by Mrs Peter Dick; an attractive little subject for two violins, ‘ Scenes Afloat ’ (Adam Carse), played by _ Misses Stella Bayley and Bessie Paine; group of Hebridean sea songs, sung by Mrs W. J. White; overture, ‘ Fingal’s Cave,’ played as a duet by Mesdames Peter Dick and A. de Boer"; Elgar's ‘ Sea Pictures,’ sung by Miss M Fenton and accompanied by Mrs Elliffe ;■ vocal ducts—‘ Come Unto These Yellow Sands ’ (Markham Lee), ‘My Soul Is Awakened ’ (Long-mire) ; ‘Foreign Craft’ (Gerard Williams), sung by Misses Mabel Grant and Betty Allen (accompanist, Miss Meda Paine). At the conclusion of the programme a vote of thanks to the performers was proposed by Mrs A. A. Fairhairn, after which supper was served.
