NORTH OTAGO NOTES
[Fkom Ode Oamaed Correspondent.] HAMPDEN FATALITY. An inquest was held at Oamaru yesterday, before Mr A. W. Woodward, J.P. (coroner), into the death of James Robert Familton, who suffered fatal injuries while engaged in bridge-build-ing work at the Kuri-iti bridge, Hamp : den, on September 2. Evidence was given that deceased had tied a chain round a concrete pile, which was being lifted. He got caught in the chain, and the pile moved and rolled on him. The Coroner commented that the occurrence was purely accidental, and returned a verdict that deceased died as the result of injuries received while working on a bridge-building contract. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The North Otago team to plav Otago on Saturday at Oamaru is as follows: —S. Easton (captain), K. M'Cabe, J. Green, A. Kilgour, R. M'Laren, D. Gillies, B. Ede, R. Brown, I. Geddes, N. Low, J. Hedley, J. Daley, E. Strachan, R. Miller, J. Depree. Emergencies: Forwards, L. Mulligan, J. Campbell; backs, E. Greaves, A. Anderson. COLUMBA TENNIS CLUB. The annual report of the Columha Tennis Club states that the interest displayed last season was not up to past standards, owing to _ inclement weather. Both teams acquitted themselves well. Several members were selected for representative teams. The courts were kept in good order. Thanks are given to all who assisted the club during the year. RUGBY SUB-UNION. The final points in the Waitaki Subunion’s competition are _as follows; Georgetown 19, Tokarahi 17. Windsor 13, Otekaike 13, Duntroon 12, Omarama 10, Pirates 2. EUCHRE PARTY, At a euchre party at Ardgowan, the winners were Mrs I. Robb and Mr R. B. Meek. Consolation prizes went to Mrs Kay and Mr D. Copland. After the games, Mr Meek spoke on the Centennial proposals and enlisted the aid of a number of canvassers. WAITAKI LABOUR PARTY. A successful euchre party was held by the Waitaki Labour Party, the winners being Miss Vera Stringer, Mrs Meyer, and Messrs S. Simpson and R. Stringer. Consolation prizes were won by Miss H. Simpson and Mr T. Harper. MINIATURE RIFLES. Following are the results of the Andrew Cup competition (possible 400), shot by teams of five men from affiliated clubs. Timaru A and Manst Old Boys A (Christchurch) tied for first place and will shoot off immediately. Scores Timaru A and Marist Old Boys A 397, City Guards (Invercargill) 39(3 Studholme and Willnwhndge B 395* Arthur Barnett’s and West End ('Timaru) 394, Waiau A (Tautapere),. Makikihi. and Marist Old Boys B 392, Waiau (North Canterbury) and Pleasant Point A 390, Oamaru Railway A, Maheno A, Willowbridge A, and Morven 389. Glonavy A. Pleasant Point B, and Willowbridge C 388. Dunedin A, Hook. Oamaru Railway B, Oamaru B. and Claremont 387. Oamaru Volunteers and Dunedin B 386. GJenavy B 385, Waiau B and West End 384, Oamaru A 380. Twenty-six individuals scored possibles to count into the aggregate of this competition, and the subsequent Bateman Cup competition, in which two more individual targets arc to be shot.
