COURSING

SOUTH OTAGO MEETING [From Odr Correspondent.] The South Otago Coursing Club held a very successful meeting on its plumptou at Balclutha on Saturday. Two stakes were decided. Unfortunately, owing to the petrol restrictions, some of the dogs intending to take part could not get here, and there were only five dogs running in each stake. The hares were in great condition, and some very fine coursing was seen. Mr E. G. Price (Dunedin) gave every satisfaction as judge, while Mr G. Sinclair gave a very fine exhibition of slipping. Mr James Gold (as and Mr C. Garside (as secretary) carried out their duties with credit. At the conclusion of the meeting Mr Gold presented the prizes won and congratulated the winners on their success. At night -the visitors were entertained at a social function, a very happy time being spent bv all present. Mr G. Sinclair was in the chair. Mr Price, in the course of conversation,, said that the South Otago plumpton was one of the finest in New Zealand, and expressed disappointment at the lack of interest shown by the public of the district. The results of the coursing were:— MAIDEN STAKE, First £3, second £l.' —First Round. — Marshall Bros.’ (Edendale)_ Janet Gaynor beat Miss Gladys Sinclair’s (Paretai) No Takers, n.s. Janet Gaynor won decisively. Led by a length, turned twice and tripped. No Takers killed. 3HA. Low’s (Balclutha) Popeye’s Mate beat J. T. Jarvis’s (Dunedin) Gunplay. The winner led all the way and won very decisively. —Second Round.— Janet Gaynor beat Atuarere. si-2], Janet Gaynor led by two lengths. Exchanges on hare fairly even. A good course. Popoye’s Mate ran a bye. —Final.— Popeye’s Mate (Grand Laddie —Ladv Diana) beat Janet Gaynor. Three courses were necessary before finality was reached. The second run brought no decision, and in the third run Popeye’s Mate led throughout by a good six lengths and won without turning the hare. GOLD MEMORIAL SHIELD. First £5 and shield, second £3 3s. —First Round.— E. C. Robinson’s (Dunedin) Fairy Divet, n.s., beat D. Sinclair’s (Balclutha) Big Smoke, n.s., 2-li- The winner led by a length, and exchanges on the hare were even. Marshall Bros.’ Away heat J. Gold’s (Balclutha) Pot Luck, Pot Luck led up, but was passed by Away, who led by two lengths and wrenched to cover. J. T. Jarvis’s Even Money ran a bye. —Second Round.— Fairy Divet beat Even Money, 3-J-l. The winner led by three lengths, turned, wrenched, and won very decisively. Awav ran a bye. —Final.— Fairy Divet (Divet’s Pride—Fairy Terms) beat Away. A splendid bare, and the dogs drew to a long lead. Even exchanges followed. Fairy Divet finally taking charge and driving home. A really splendid course. A competition conducted bv the club resulted in Mr J. Jarvis (Dunedin) being the winner.
