NORTH OTAGO NOTES
[Peou Uua Oamaru Correspondent.] HAMPDEN FATALITY. Tho death occurred at the Oamaru Hospital last night of Janies Robert Paniilton, bridge builder, of Hampden, aged 31 years, as the result of injuries received when a concrete pile rolled over him. The accident occurred at the new Kuri-iti bridge. WAITAKI OLD BOYS. The annual report of the Waitaki Old Boys’ Association states that, while membership had not decreased, unpaid subscriptions had resulted in a fall in capitation by £l2 9s 2d. Only two branches—Oamaru and Timaru—showed an increase in capitation. All branches had held reunions, and had shown loyalty and attachment to the school. The death of Mr JohiiHarkness, first rector of the school, had occurred at Cheltenham, England, on July 28, 1938, and the news had been received with great regret. Day had been a great success. No decision as to the form of the M. K. M'Cullocli memorial would be made until tho result'of the appeal for contributions was known. The school roll had shown an increase, and the school had had a successful year, both scholastically and in sport. The grounds now comprised 75 acres. The Old Girls’ Association was congratulated on the success of the itibiToe celebrations of tho Girls School. TABLE TENNIS. Fifty players competed at the North Otago table tennis championships on Saturday night. The standard of play was good. Mr W. Reid (president of the South Canterbury Association) presented the trophies. The finals resulted as follows: Men’s Singles.—F. O’Gorman (Tiraaru) heat W. Giffin (Dunedin), 21-11, 18-21, 21-17, 21-16. Men’s Doubles.—J. Beattie 'and W. D. Robson beat L. S. Green and W. Giffin, 21-19, 19-21, 21-16, 14-21, 21-17. Women’s Singles.—Miss N. Dowthwaite beat Miss H. Brewster, 21-18, 21-13. Women’s Doubles.—Misses E. Joiner and Miss H. Brewster beat Miss N. Dowthwaite and Mrs M'Coue, 17-2-1, 21-14, 21-9. Mixed Doubles.—F. O’Gorman and Miss Dowthwaite heat V. Harding (Timaru) and Mrs M'Cone. 21-16, 2114. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE. All the candidates who sat for the examination conducted by the Oamaru branch of St. John Ambulance Association passed, those fulfilling tho requirements being as follows : —First aid: Alice Addison, Violet Barsdell, Muriel Barclay, Anetta Blyth, Elizabeth K. Orbell. who stated that the standard was above the average and the practical work was good. GOLF. A foursome medal match was played by the North Otago Golf Club on Saturday in fine weather. The best scores were : Fastier and Sceats 87—12—75, Meible and Murison 98—22—76. Bennett and J. Catto 103—27—76. In the senior championship, first round, F. Crimp beat A. M'Beath, 1 up.
