SOUTH OTAGO NOTES

[From Odr Correspondent.] FOOTBALL. Football in South Otago was brought to a conclusion on Saturday, when Clutha 11. won the Boyd Cup and Crescent won the senior Knock-out Cup. There was a good attendance on the Balclutha ground, where both matches were played, and some very good football.was seen. In the Boyd Cup match between Clutha and Union the score at half-time was 3-3. Robinson goaled from a penalty lor Union, and Hansen levelled the scores by scoring for Clutha. In the second spell Clutha played well, and Byers and Sutherland scored, the Clutha boys winning by 9 points to 3. Mr G. M'Allau was referee. The senior game was most exciting, especially towards the finish. The first score went to Crescent from a penalty kick by Forrester. Immediately after Shand scored from a nice passing rush by Clutha backs. There was no further score at half-time. In the second spell Crescent had the better of the game right through. Their forwards played a great game and secured the ball in the majority of the scrums. Shand kicked a penalty goal for Clutha, and after some very interesting play Blair scored for Crescent. 6-6. Crescent kept up a determined attack, and Forrester, who had made several previous attempts, eventually “potted” a nice goal. 10-6. This reverse livened Clutha up, and after some exciting play Shand scored wide out, but failed to add the winning points, and Crescent won the cup by 10 points to 9. Mr D. Inglis was referee. The various competitions have been won as follows: —Senior banner, Clutha' senior cup, Crescent; second grade banner and Boyd Cup, Clutha; third grade banner, Crescent; third grade cup, Clutha. On Saturday night the Clutha Club held a very successful function to mark the opening of the new club room. There was a large attendance, over which Mr C. G. Clark presided. A lengthy toast list was honoured, and a very happy time was spent by all present. The club is to be congratulated on its enterprise in building the room, and it is very gratifying to note that there is only a small liability on the building, the bulk of the money having been raised by special effort. Next Saturday evening the club is entertaining the third grade team at a tea in honour of it securing the cup. In the afternoon a match is to be played between old members for the old buffers’ banner. Players must be over 40, and already teams have been selected. SCHOOLS AT PLAY. At Balclutha on Saturday the annual seven-a-side Rugby tournament and basketball competition between the schools of South Otago were held.
