Y.W.C.A. NOTES

(Contributed.) Basketball.—On September- 1 a Y.W.C.A. grade ‘team andl an Interhouse team went to Christchurch to compete in a tournament arranged by the Christchurch Y.W.C.A. sports department. Mrs M'Aughtrie was in charge of, the teams, whch were given hospitality by the Christchurch Y.W.C.A. Two teams from Timaru also competed, Dunedin Grade team won both its games, which were against Christchurch A and Timaru A respectively. Dunedin Intorhouse team won its game aganst Timaru B, and drew its game against Christchurch Combined. They all enjoyed the games, though the Dunedin teams were not accustomed to grass courts, which, owing to previous bad weather, were very muddy. On Sunday evening the teams were entertained at tea by the Y.W.C.A. and Y.M.C.A. at their social hour. The week-end was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Interhouso Sports.—Girls are now practising on the Caledonian Ground tor_ the Y.W.C.A. interhouse sports, which are to be held on the first Saturday in October. Letters have been sent to firms employing girls asking for the active participation of teams. This annual event creates great interest among the girls. This will be the fifth year these sports have been held l . The Amateur Athletic Association kindly gives assistance in the organising. Social Events.—On Monday, September 4, the monthly social of the Everygirl Club was held in the cafeteria. The programme of musical items, recitations, dancing, and community singing, and the excellent supper were enjoyed by all. On Thursday, September 7, the monthly ex-hostel girls’ “ at home ” was held in the hostel. Preparations are being made for the annual meeting of the Y.W.C.A., which will take place on Wednesday, September 20, at 8 p.m. After the business meeting the annual birthday party will be held. NEWS FROM OTHER ASSOCIA-' TIONS. Wanganui. The newly-formed Y.W.C.A.-Y.M.C.A. at Wanganui has inaugurated a “ Good Samaritans’ Club,” the actvities of which are Stitchery Circle, Stamp Circle, .play-reading, tramps and picnics, and occasional parties. These activities are preceded each evening by a half-hour period for business announcements and yospors* The

programme of their Girl Citizens’ Community includes choir-singing, rhythm band, and play-reading. A kindergarten class for boys and girls aged five to 10 years is being held, the activities of which include competitive games, story-telling, and juvenile handicrafts. They are workng on a crafts display for the Y.W.C.A. section at the Centennial Exhibition. A Business Girls’ Lyceum is also being formed. Kuala Lumpur, Malay Peninsula.— The Y.W.C.A. at Kuala Lumpur, in the centre of thfe Malay Peninsula, is rich in international membership, and the costumes of members are wonderful suits in bright colours, the wonderfully becoming long Shanghai dresses, the gay Malay sarongs and bajus. Miss Audrey M'Crea, late of the Wellington Association, is general secretary, with a charming Chinese girl, Wong Tet Yin. as assistant. The 92 younger girl members are called Pioneers, and the older group, numbering about 25, are Wayfarers. There is a Business and Professional Women’s Club of 36 members. The Sports Club sponsors badminton, tennis, hockey, netball, etc. There is a Chinese ladies’ group, and numerous classes for home nursing, German, Dutch, cookery, handicrafts, etc. Boatloads of exiled Jews have been arriving in Singapore en route for Shanghai, one of the few places where they may be admitted. The Y.W.C.A. in Malaya has been able to help many of these girls and women, and the Shanghai Association has been running English classes for them.
