PORT CHALMERS BRANCH Mr J. M'Ehvee presided last night at the annual mooting of the Port Chalmers branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. The adoption of the annual report and balance sheet was moved by the President, who said that the major work of the committee bad been the handling of funds and allotting work under the unemployment scheme of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association, and the committee had handled £217, all of which bad been spent on giving work to unemployed returned men. 'There had been an increase in membership in the Returned Soldiers’ Association. Ex-servicemen were realising the benefits that were to be obtained from being members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association. There were others who were receiving benefits who were not yet members. Through the efforts of the committee and the assistance rendered by a willing band of lady helpers, receipts from the sale of poppies and the proceeds from the ladies’ stall, the sum forwarded to the Returned Soldiers’ Association was £s4—an increase of £8 on. last year’s figures. The Social Committee had worked untiringly in the interests of their less fortunate comrades, and during the year a sum of £65 15s 8d had been raised through its efforts, enabling the committee to issue to every unemployed ex-serviceman three bags of coal on a subsidised basis, and also to assist other cases of distress. During the year two free-and-easy social evenings had been held, which had proved very successful functions. The committee had, on behalf of returned men, made several applications to the Otago Patriotic Society for help, and every application had received favourable consideration. The motion was carried without discussion.
