HARRY WATSON’S SUCCESS

An interesting letter has been received from Les Fleming, a prominent Christchurch cash cyclist at present in Australia. Fleming states that ho and Harry Watson raced in the annual Barnett Glass race of 160 miles (says the Christchurch ‘Star’)- At the start of the race Watson had trouble with his back, but recovered Hater to go through and secure fastest time. Fleming was unlucky in puncturing only 15 miles from the finish. Afterchanging his tyre he was soon caught by Watson, who finished in sixth place. Fleming finished seventh. Watson collected £2O for his prize and Fleming won the “ B ” grade prize of £B. Fleming states that it was a great experience to be racing undey the grade system. There were three grades. _ A (scratch), B (20min), and C (40min). He is of the opinion that it is far superior to, the handicap system of racing.. There, is a compulsory stop at about halfway of 10 minutes for refreshments, riders being checked in and out as they arrive, •iot soup, bread rolls, saveloys, orange drink, etc., being supplied.. Fleming and Watson intended competing in the Tour de Gippsland, 140 miles on October S and in the Warrnambool-Melbourne race on October 17.
