BURNSIDE STOCK SALES
DECREASED FAT CATTLE PRICES Although there was a fair-sized entry of good quality sbrts, the fat cattle ,at Burnside to-day failed to sell at prices equal to those of last week, and the general decrease in value throughout the sale was 20s for bullocks and 10s for cows and heifers. Fat sheep were maintaining late rates at the opening of the sale, but were not expected to remain at that level, as too many were forward, and outside purchasers had not put in an appearance. Fat lambs, of which there were more than usual* sold well.
Good quality generally was seen in the fat cattle pens, which were filled to the extent of 255 head. The entry in* eluded a few pens of nice, prime heavy! bullocks, although the majority was made up of medium weights, which showed fine quality. Light-weight beef forward was also of the better classSome specially attractive cows and heifers were sent in, but there were not many of these, the main portion) of the yarding containing the medium! types and tailing off to some of the inferior grades. The sale opened on aS race of some very good cattle, and,, aa there was no animation, prices were easier by about 20s for bullocks and Ida for cows and heifers. A temporary inn provement was felt about the middle of the market, but prices slipped hack to. opening rates before the finish.

Fat lambs were in greater supply than usual. The quality was really good, and the local consignments claimed more attention than those brought from farther afield. Competition was good, with prices ranging from 24s fid to 30s fid l . Well over 2,000 fat sheep came forward. Her© good quality w& placed before the buyers, and there were several outstanding sheep of both sexes that were attractive. While there were some specially fine wethers, the majority in this section were of the medium weight, with a number of light-woolled sorts that were totally unsuitable for butchers, and were, therefore, only of interest to graziers. The ewes were largely comparable with the wethers. The large entry was in excess of local requirements, and! it wa« thought that values would drop unless competition from outside butchers and graziers was brought to bolster up the sale. The market opened at prices which were similar to those ruling a week ago. A medium-sized yarding of store cattle included several pens of wellbred three and four-year-old steers, but in sympathy with the fat market prices were considerably lower. One pen of good four-year-olds brought £9 ss, while three-year-olds sold from £6 10s to £9, with two-year-olds from £4 2a fid to £6 ss. Heifers sold from £3 10s fid to £4 19s, and cows fit for grazing from £3 to £3 10s. A small entry of boner cows sold at recent values. Fat pigs yarded numbered 1 121 ana stores 142. Bacon pigs sold from £3 7s to £4 ISs, being worth-about 6]d lb, and porkers realised from £2 .to £3, or about 7Jd 'lb..
