THE HOUSING SCHEME
GOVERNMENT'S HUGE UNDERTAKING CONCENTRATING ON NORTH ISLAND FIRST [Peom Our Parliamentary Reporter.] WELLINGTON, October 7. An indication of the huge scale in which the Government’s housing scheme is to be tackled was given by Mr Lee (Under-Secretary for Housing) in a brief interview this morning. Criticism of the Government’s decision to establish large joinery works in Auckland and Wellington was referred to Mr Lee, who replied: “Once we get our plans into full operation there will not be a bit of efficient plant in New Zealand, public or private, that will prove to be redundant.” Mr Lee indicated that he was concentrating his activities in Auckland and Wellington at present, but said that the South Island, and particularly Christchurch, would come into the scheme before long. The Housing Department, he said was mainly concerned in the building of houses for letting purposes, and when a proper start had been, made it would extend its activities.
