STRANGE ACCIDENT TO AEROPLANE LANDS SAFELY ON ONE WHEEL Press Association—By Telegraph —Copyright LONDON, October 5. “ Port wheel burst. Clear the aerodrome for arrival at 3.45 p.m.” was a sensational wireless message received at Renfrew airport from Captain Elgey, who was flying a 10-seater passenger plane from Belfast to Glasgow with two other The plane was 4,000 ft up over the Irish Sea, flying in a dense mist, when there was a violent bump and an explosion. Captain Elgey said he did not know what happened. He just waited for the plane to fall to pieces in the sea, but when he flew from the mist he looked out and saw that the greater part of the undercarriage and wheel had disappeared. Apparently tho plane had been hit by an aeroplane climbing in the haze. Captain Elgey miraculously landed tho heavv plane on the remaining wheel without mishap, swinging the machine round as it touched the ground. He alighted in a semi-con-scious condition as the result of tho ordeal. What hit the plane is still a mystery as no plane has been reported missing.
