ELLERSLIE TRACK WORK AUCKLAND CANDIDATES IN ACTION [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, October C. In view of the Auckland Spring Meeting on Saturday and Monday, there was a good deal of fast work at Itllcrslie this morning, when the semi-final gallops took place. The course proper, with poles 40ft out, was in most demand, the going being in good order. The No. 3 grass, sand, tan, hurdles, and steeplechase courses were also open. The best efforts of the morning were those of Red Manfred, Flood Tide, Kelly, and Karl on fhe course proper. Roman Mascot did a round in 2min •JOsec. She ran the last seven furlongs in Imin 41 3-ssec, going comfortably. Speedfast did a seven furlong peg in Imin 40 2-ssec. and Wee Pat finished up her work with six furlongs in Imin 30sec. ... Kilonsoa impressed more than lligh Star in six furlongs in Imin 23sec, the first three in 39 3-ssec. Flood Tide and Knight of Australia, with Mai De Mer to assist them over the last six furlongs, ran a mile and a-quarter in 2min 18sec, the last six in Imin 24 4-ssec. Flood Tide finished in front of Knight of Australia, and his effort will bring him into favour for the Mitchelson Cup. Gay Princess, Dialogue, and Caliente finished in that order over six furlongs in Imin 23 4-ssec, the first three in 39 3-ssec. Dialogue is. coming to hand nicely. Carshalton, after taking 41 3-oscc for the first three furlongs, registered Imm 38seo for seven. . Morning Sun did a half-mile m ol 3-osec. Tin Lap and Haputale ran the same distance in 52sec. After getting the worst of the start, Salva finished several lengths in front of Backhlock, yloing five furlongs in Imin 7 3-osec a good effort for novices. Kelly, after completing the first three furlongs in 38 3-ssec, got to the end of six in Imin 18 3-ssec —the best of the morning over the distance. Jewelled Girdle was a shade in front of Valspear over six furlongs in Imin 21sec, the last half-mile in 63 l-ssec. The only gallop over a mile was that of Manawhenna and Royal Appellant, in Imin 45 3-ssec, the last six in Imin 20sec. They were together at the finish. Royal Appellant, on the outside, again worked nicely after breakfast. lied Manfred covered a mile and a quarter in 2min 16 _ 4-ssec. the last seven furlongs in Imin 33sec and the final three in 41 2-ssec—first-class effort —and finishing on well. Bon Star ran half a mile in 52 3-5 sec, doing it nicely. The Great Northern Guineas candidates Golden Blonde and Mandamus covered five furlongs in Imin 6 l-osec, the first two in 25 3-ssec. Golden Blonde finished a couple of lengths in front, but Mandamus could have been closer.

Vera Aero and a Rossendale gelding in the same stable covered six furlongs in Imin 22sec, going well.^ Francis Drake and Aiwai came home from the half-mile post in 52.555ec. Francis Drake, a free galloper, was slightly in front. Gar Vaals finished up useful work by running the last three furlongs in 42sec. Karl was sent over six furlongs, and after taking 38 1-5 for the first three came home in 1 19 3-ssec. Fleetwind ran half a mile in 53sec on the No. 3 grass. Marjory Daw did six furlongs in Imin 23 4-ssec, the last three in 42 3-ssec. Lord Val, after schooling, did six furlongs in Imin 23sec. Valmint was going comfortably while traversing half a mile in 54 4-ssec, with an increased speed over the last three, which took 40sec. Kaola gave a satisfactory display over four hurdles in the centre, and was afterwards sent over the steeplechase fences on the flat, and gave a good exhibition. Volition cleared six hurdles, jumping well. Lord Val, Arabesque, All Irish, and Mountain Bruce, in that order, went over four hurdles. They had a lot of pace on, and Lord Val made an excellent showing. Arabesque also went well. Electric Flash, Zane Grey, Gold Rod, and Vilma were associated in a round over the steeplechase course. Electric Flash was in front throughout, and they all got round safely. Sunee was scratched for all engagements at the Auckland meeting at 9 a.m. to-day. Recent arrivals include Fersen and Carsharper, in charge of H. Gray, Eaola (S. Cleaver), Entail and Spiral (\V. I’ayncr). SWIMMING COUNCIL HEADQUARTERS NO SUPPORT FOR OTAGO PROPOSAL [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, October 6. So far the Otago Swimming Centre’s criticism of the New Zealand Council has fallen on barren ground. Already the Canterbury and Auckland Centres have expressed their confidence in the council, and have unanimously turned down the Otago proposal that the headquarters of the council should be changed from Christchurch. Now another centre ( Hawke’s Bay) has carried a motion of confidence in the council. At the meeting of the Hawke's liny Centro, held a few days ago, the Otago proposals failed ‘to find any support. Delegates contended that the,, points put forward against the

council were incorrect, or only half correct, and that to change headquarters would serve no practical purpose, but would lead to disorganisation of swimming control in the Dominion.
