ACCIDENTS AND DEATHS
FATAL GUNSHOT WOUND. A rabbit shooting expedition at Runciman, 26 miles south of Auckland, early on Sunday morning, ended with the death from a gunshot wound in the chest of John Reginald Smith, married, aged 33 years, of Hoskill*The fatality occurred about 2 a.m. In company with a girl, aged 19, Smith left the city by motor car at 11 o’clock on Saturday night. Just beyond Runctman they stopped the car, and Smith got out and walked a few feet away, where he fired a shot to test the ,410 single-barrelled shotgun. _ When tha second shot was heard, his companion, who remained in the car, saw him fall, and on investigation she found him dead. She immediately drove to Auckland and reported the fatality to the police. CHILD SUFFOCATED BY STUD. Wilfred Henry Moseley, aged three years and two months, while playing with two infant members of the family at Westport on Saturday, is believed to have swallowed a stud. He was suffocated before medical attention could be obtained. SUDDEN DEATH IN CAR. An Otaki Association message states tht Mrs Catherine Neilsen, wife of Mr Andrew Neilsen, died at Waikanae on Saturday night. She was sitting in » car and suddenly collapsed. FALL FROM BICYCLE. Suffering from shock and concussion as the result of falling off her bicycle at Look-out Point, Zoe Knight, aged 14, residing with her parents at 69 Warrender street, was admitted to the Hospital at 6.50 p.m. on Saturday. DROWNED IN GREY RIVER. A Grevmouth Association message states that Hugh Henry Hambleton (56), an engineer,' with a wife and three children, was drowned in the Grey River this morning. An attempt at rescue by a seaman failed. Hamhleton had been ill for tho past four months. A DUNEDIN MAN’S DEATH. A Palmerston North Association messages states that the police have received advice that Thomas Aitken (73) was found dead in bed yesterday at the residence of his sister-in-law, Mrs Smith, of Tiraumea, near Eketahuna. Deceased recently came from Dunedin. SEQUEL TO ILL-HEALTH. William Power, a prominent Stratford accountant, was found dead in hit office this morning by his deny’ .er Marie, a .303 rifle between his knees. Deceased had left home at 8.30 in c is morning. His daughter arrived at tha office, where she was employed, at tha usual time, and going into Po. 4 room to open the window found bit body. He wos secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and had served on Gallipoli and been wounded and invalided home. He was also secretary of the local War Funds Council, and until recently secretary of the Stratford Racing Club. He had been in illhealth for some time past. He leave* a widow and three children.—Pres* Association.
