KUROW JOCKEY CLUB
QUEER DOROTHY WINS CUP RASTER GARRY'S BELATED SUCCESS Fine- weather favoured the Kurow Jockey Club for its annual race meeting on Saturday afternoon, but a strong Cor’wester wind, accompanied by clouds of dust at .times, somewhat marred the pleasure of the fixture. The attendance, including a large number of visitors from Dunedin, was good, the gate takings being about £lO better than last year’s.
Though the fields were small, the racing was interesting, and several of the finishes exciting and close. After the cup race the trophy attached to the stake was presented to Mr M‘Cone, one of the owners of the winner, Queen Dorothy, by Mrs A. S. Cambridge, the wife or the president. As Mr M‘Coue is a resident of the district, the success of this mare was a very popular one. With one exception, in the fivo-fur-loug race, Mr Gieseler’s starting was satisfactory. The meeting was excellently managed, and punctuality was most strictly observed, the last race starting exactly at the advertised time. The totalisator handled £1,056, an increase of £598 10s on the total invested last year. Results;— HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, 70sovs, second 10, third 5, Minimum weight 9st. NOTES UN THE RAGING [By St. Clair.] Poniard and Ada were the popular fancies for the High-weight Handicap, with Polygraph the only other starter well fancied. Poniard at once took command, and Jed Polygraph and Ada out of the straight and along the back. After rounding the far turn Polygraph lost his position, and Toreador ran past Ada before making the home turn. Poniard was still well dear at this stage, and ran homo a very easy winner by two lengths from Toreador, who beat Polygraph by a slightly wider margin. Ada was a fair fourth. The winner was ridden by R. J. Mackie, who so far lias ridden in only two huklle races, but gave the stipendiary steward an undertaking that bo was prepared to accept any mount offered him iu hurdle races.
In a field of four Wine Card was backed down to a shorl odds-ou chance iu the Trial Plate, and, jumping out smartly, led Last Dance and Brevity along the back and across the top. At the liome turn Brevity moved up to Last Dance, and at the distance looked Hike catching the favourite, but the latter stayed on to beat Brevity home by a short lentgh, with Last Dance four lengths away third.
The locally-owned and trained King Drusus was slightly better fancied than the back marker, Cerebus, for the Waitaki Harness Handicap. (Bamboozle broke at the start and interfered with King Drusus and Sunstress. Master Garry led Ayrshire over the first three furlongs, and then King Drusus ran into third place. As they raced along the back King Drusus ran up alongside Master Garry and the pair led Ayrshire, Sunstress, and Cerebus into the straight. Cerebus caught the leaders at the distance, then Sunstress put in a good run on the outside, and, in a very interesting finish, Sunstress got up to beat Cerebus by a short head. King Drusus was a head away third, only a neck in front of Master Garry.
In another four-horse field for the T. A. Munro Handicap, Silver Slipper, on her Geraldine form, was made a much better favourite than Silver Sail. The latter was first out, and led the favourite all the way, beating the three-year-old home very easily by two and a-half lengths. Pink Paper was a length off third.
All but Southdown weighed out for the Kurow Cup, but W. K. Jones was not allowed to ride Rona Bay, and she was withdrawn before the betting commenced. Queen Dorothy and Polydora both started at odds on prices, the former at a very short price. Royal Gallant immediately shot to the front, and at the end of half a mile was out six lengths from Toreador. Approaching the far turn, Royal Gallant was five lengths clear of the others, who were racing abreast. Royal Gallant was first into the straight from Queen Dorothy and Polydora, but then dropped out. Polydora appeared to have Queen Dorothy’s measure at the distance, but L. J. 1011 is asked the favourite for a final effort three or four strides from the post, and heat Polydora by half a bead in the fast time of 2min G l-osee. The track record is held by Polydora, who won this race in 1933 in 2min ojsoc. Ada was throe lengths away third, with Toreador a poor fourth. W. H. Jones was suspended by the Judicial Committee for two months for misconduct. * * ' • * The Waipahi-Cerebus bracket was made a slightly better favourite than Inquisition for the 1 fnkatarainca Harness Handicap, hut backers of the former had a bad spin for their money. Corobus fell at the end of two furlongs, and about a furlong from home Waipahi, who looked like finishing in the money, ran off the course and fell out-
.siJo the fence. .Ayrshire find Bamboozle Jed -Master Barry for half a mile and tlien the latter ran into second l>lacc. As lliay turned for home Master Barry ran past Ayrshire and stayed on to beat, St. Lyria home by three lengths.. Inquisition was six lengths away third, just in front of Ayrshire.
Rousseau was bached down to a very shorts odds-on price for the Novice Plate, and was only beaten by a bad start, Lord Nuffield and Peacock also being badly left. Jlithyia got the advantage and Jed Rebel Mate and Last Dance round to the far turn and into the straight. At the distance Last Dance headed llithyia, and then the favourite commenced a good run. Last Dance just lasted long enough to boat Rousseau by a nose, llithyia was a length and a-half away third, with Rebel Mate a bad fourth.
On her Geraldine win Silver Lark was made a much better favourite than Stratosphere or Polygraph for the Billies Handicap. Silver Slimier was first to show out from an excellent start and led Silver Bark lo the bach. After passion- the five-furlong post Brevity ran into second place, and rounding the far turn Stratosphere was just showing m third place. Silver Slipper was first into the straight. Then Stratosphere ran up to her and ran homo the easiest winner of the meeting by three lengths from Polygraph, who finished better than Silver Lark and beat her by a head, with Silver Slipper another head away fourth. . . Just before reaching the winning post Brevity was seen to falter, and ho pulled up with a broken leg, and had to be destroyed.
