INDENTURED LABOUR IN SAMOA
REPATRIATION ISSUE HOT YET PAGED [From Our Parliam r. xta r v Reported.l WELLINGTON, October 3. One of the policy declarations of the Labour Party prior to its success at the last General Election was that the indentured labour system in Samoa should cease, and that tho Chinese and Melanesian labourers in the territory should bo repatriated. There appears to be an objection to this course among the Europeans in Samoa, and a protest has been sent to the Government against tho reported intention to carry out icpatriations. The Prime Minister, Mr Savage, when questioned on the subject, stated to-day that ho had received a communication from Messrs Smyth and Carrutheis, who are members of the Samoan Legislative Council, suggesting that laboureis should not bo repatriated, but tho uovernment had not considered that question, and had therefore not come to any decision. ~ According to the last report on the .Mandated Tcrritorv of Western Samoa there arc 503 Chinese labourers in the country and 93 Melanesians, all o whom are employed on New Aealaud reparation estates.
