REMOVING DENTS FROM WINGS

Dented wings can be put right by an amateur if he exercises patience and care. There arc two ways of doing it with the wing still in position on the car, and presentable results are possible. The first method is to nse one of tho special rolling tools marketed for the job. These comprise U-shaped carriers taking rollers of hardened steel between the jaws; they grip the wing and by the gradual process of working closer and closer towards, and finally over, the damaged section of wing tho dent can be effaced. Where no such tool is available the dent can be hammered out. The dented part should be backed by a block of hard wood, shaped to approximately the contour of the wing and held in position by hand. The hammering process should he a slow, careful one, consisting of a series of gentle taps with the ball end of the hammer. The paint, naturally, will be damaged, so that at the completion of the straightening the surface should be rubbed down to a bright finish, levelled up with “ stopping.’’ and finally painted with undercoat and top.
